Brook nips Sumrall; shut down by Petal

PETAL — The Brookhaven Panthers rallied to beat the SumrallBobcats 5-4 Saturday, but then fell to the host Petal Panthers 10-0in the final game of the Petal Tournament.

Brookhaven (12-3) travels to McComb Tuesday for two games withthe division rival Tigers. The junior varsity game begins at 5 p.m.followed by the varsity at 7.

Brookhaven trailed Sumrall 3-1 going into the top of the seventhinning. Josh Coone smashed a 2-run home run to tie the game at3-all. With two runners on base, Zach Watson drove in pinch runnerR.J. Jenkins (for Mitch Pappas) and Marlon Dixon for the two runsthat pushed the Panthers’ lead to 5-3. Pappas and Dixon hadsingled.

The Bobcats cut their deficit to one run in the bottom of theseventh but couldn’t tie the game.

Cole Newell (2-0) was the winning hurler, working 6 1/3 inningswith 4 runs (1 earned), 9 hits, 3 strikeouts and 1 walk. Gettingthe save in the final 2/3 innings was Paxton King with 1strikeout.

“Cole Newell threw an outstanding ball game,” said Brookhavenhead baseball coach Randy Spring. “We struggled offensively untilthe seventh. The kids battled back and never quit.”

Watson sustained an injury during the play that won thegame.

Adding support to the Brookhaven win with a single was King.

In the second game of the day, Brookhaven was held to four hitsin their fourth game over two days. The Panthers had beatenFlorence twice Friday night.

“Zach Watson couldn’t pitch,” said Spring. “Pappas threw acouple of innings. The pitchers battled. We played a pretty goodteam. We had to juggle our lineup.”

Michael Lindsey went the distance for Petal with 4 hits allowedand 6 strikeouts. Pappas (0-1) took the loss, working the first 21/3 innings with 6 runs allowed on 6 hits, 2 strikeouts and 1 walk.Nick Helmstetter worked 1 inning with 4 runs allowed on 4 hits, 1strikeout and 4 walks. Chris Dixon finished 1/3 innings.

Newell sparked Brookhaven at the plate with two singles. ElliottWarren and Dixon singled.
