Van Norman’s 3-run blast saves South; Zumbro picked MVP

HATTIESBURG -The South edged the North 7-6 Saturday in the Class1A-2A-3A Mississippi HIgh School All-Star Baseball Game as a 3-runhomer by North Pike’s Buddy Van Norman, with two out in the bottomof the ninth inning, provided the margin of victory. Van Normanalso pitched the third and fourth innings at Pete Taylor Parklocated on the University of Southern Mississippi campus. He gaveup one hit and walked three.
Brad McKee of West Lauderdale was the winning pitcher. Hepitched the ninth inning and recorded one strikeout.
Brian Terry of Houlka was the losing pitcher.
Franklin County’s Cole Zumbro was named the South’s MostValuable Player. He hit a towering 3-run homer in the fourth inningto end a scoring drought. Zumbro pitched the first two innings,striking out 1 batter and allowing 1 hit.
Zumbro said he was surprised to win the honor. “I got the MVPaward somehow,” said Zumbro. “It was a good game and we were gladto win at the end.”
It was a good week for Zumbro. The Copiah-Lincoln CommunityCollege signee was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 36thround.
Loyd Star catcher Chase Coley was a pinch runner in the last twoinnings. He caught the sixth and seventh innings.
Catcher Nathan Cutrer of Bogue Chitto went 0-for-3 at the plate.He had two fielder’s choices.
The North MVP was Jamie Gant of Winona. He homered in the fourthinning.
