Eight wreck victims recovering; funeral for youngster Sunday

MONTICELLO — Five of eight Lawrence Countians and one CopiahCounty resident remain hospitalized following a fatal head-oncollision on Monticello Road Tuesday.
LaBryan Showers, 2, the son of Shameca Showers and Byron May ofMonticello, died Thursday at University Medical Center inJackson.
“They’re pretty much doing OK,” said Gloria May, a relative offive of the Lawrence Countians.
Bertha Young, a relative of the family in the other vehicle,said “everyone is doing fine.”
Deosha Jackson, 15, of Copiah County, was driving a ChevyCavalier to pick up her aunt to attend a funeral while ShamecaShowers, 23, was driving another Cavalier on the way to the samefuneral when the accident occurred.
Three people were riding with Jackson: LaBryan, Erical Bryant,14, and Ashley Collins, 17.
Shameca Showers was traveling with four passengers: TaneshaTowns, 5, Jamichael Jackson, 3, Aurajana Jackson, 1, and AlijahJackson, three weeks.
Bertha Young said Erical Bryant was released from the hospitalFriday to rest at home until the swelling on her face recedes. Shesuffered numerous broken facial bones and lost or broke several ofher teeth. She will return to UMC for facial surgery after theswelling goes down.
Alijah Jackson also came home Friday. She was hospitalized atUMC for observation because of her age, May said. She suffered nosevere injuries.
Also Friday, Ashley Collins and Shameca Showers spent severalhours in surgery. Collins is the only accident victim still beingheld in the Intensive Care Unit at UMC. She broke both legs, herhip, a wrist and her liver was punctured. She was in surgery forthree hours Friday to repair damage to her legs and wrist.
Showers’ surgery was to repair damage to her knee and hipinjuries.
Deosha Jackson’s medications were decreased Saturday morning,although Bertha Young reported the girl was still in pain. Theaccident broke both her legs and an arm.
The hospital is continuing to monitor Tanesha Towns, JamichaelJackson and Aurajana Jackson. Tanesha Towns and Aurajana Jacksonsuffered internal injuries while Jamichael Jackson had internalinjuries coupled with head injuries.
May said it was possible Jamichael Jackson would be releasedSaturday and Aurajana Jackson is expected to be released byTuesday.
“They said Aurajana may be released in two or three days,” Maysaid.
May said she was aware of all the concerns in the community andcounty and they were not unappreciated.
“It’s truly a blessing from God that anyone came out of it,” shesaid. “We appreciate all the prayers and thoughts going out to themand us.”
The two cars collided about 11:45 a.m. Tuesday. The jaws of lifewere needed to extract one of the victims from the car, said WayneHarrison, chief of the Monticello Fire Department.
Harrison said three, Shameca Showers, LaBryan Showers and one ofthe infants; were flown directly to UMC by helicopter while theothers were taken immediately to UMC in two ambulances.
Funeral services for LaBryan Showers were at 1 p.m. Sunday,April 7, at Greater Mt. Olive M.B. Church in Oma with burial tofollow in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
