Wesson, LCHS. regroup after losses

The Wesson Cobras are looking to get back into the column Fridaynight when they travel to Madison St. Joseph for a key Region 6-2Atest for both teams. The game kicks off at 7 p.m.

In other area games, Lawrence County travels to Mendenhall,Franklin County invades North Pike, Port Gibson visits McComb,Magee is at Hazlehurst and Crystal Springs entertains Richland.

Wesson suffered its first loss of the seasonlast Friday after winning 5 games in a row. The Cobras are 5-1overall and 2-1 in region play after losing to St. Andrew’s 31-7.St. Joseph (4-2, 3-0) defeated Enterprise 25-6 last week.

Wesson head coach Tommy Clopton watched Madison St. Joe on filmand talked about the Bruins.

“St. Joe is a well coached football team,” said Clopton. “Theydon’t make any mistakes. They play really hard. They do a good jobexecuting on offense and defense.”

In the loss to St. Andrew’s, Wesson was sparked by Jeromy Smithwith 12 carries for 105 yards and a touchdown. Roy Williamsfollowed with 12 carries for 46 yards.

On defense, Beau Wilson led the Cobras with 11 tackles. JohnCraft finished with 10 tackles. Making 9 stops each were Kyle Crossand Zach Williams.

Last year, Wesson knocked off St. Joe 24-7.

Lawrence County is looking to get back in thewin column when the Cougars invade Mendenhall Friday. Coach MikeDavis’ Cougars had their 5-game win streak ended last week in a43-32 Region 6-4A loss to the Brookhaven Panthers.

The Cougars (5-1, 2-1) square off against the Tigers (1-5, 1-2)in a huge game.

Davis was impressed with the Tigers’ speed and size.

“Mendenhall looks like one of the most impressive teams we haveseen on film,” explained Davis. “They are big and fast. They’re ascary football team. Their little quarterback (Montrell Edwards) iselusive. He’s a good little passer.

“Defensively, the Tigers are very impressive,” added Davis.”Their defensive line is quick and physical. They fly around.”

Cougar fullback Kendrick Hardy rushed the football 21 times for208 yards and scored 3 touchdowns in the loss to Brookhaven.Freshman quarterback Adam Watson ran for 1 touchdown. Cameronfollowed with 72 yards on 8 carries.

“We are looking to bounce back from our first loss. We had agood week of practice. We want to move on.”

In last season’s game, Lawrence County knocked off Mendenhall20-7.

Franklin County is still missing quarterbackJamie Collins who is out with an injury to his back. Before Collinswas sidelined two weeks ago, Franklin County was undefeated.Without Collins, the Bulldogs are riding a 2-game losing streak,including last week’s 24-21 loss at the hands of region 7-3A rivalJefferson County.

Coach Grady McCluskey’s defending Class 3A state champ Bulldogsare 4-2, overall and 0-2 in region play. Franklin County entertainsregion foe North Pike next.

North Pike (1-5, 1-1) fell to McComb 26-3 last Friday innon-region action. The Jaguars are under the direction offirst-year head coach Chris Smith.

In the loss to Jefferson County, Franklin County was led byJordan Hunt with 15 carries for 109 yards.

Carlos Johnson recorded 12 tackles for the Bulldog defense.AlJoshua Tillman had 6 stops and intercepted a pass.

Last year, Franklin County crushed North Pike 33-7.

McComb sets its sights on Region 6-4A foe PortGibson. The Tigers, coached by Randy Martin, improved to 3-3 on theseason after beating North Pike last week. They are 0-2 in theregion.

Port Gibson (1-4, 0-2) lost to Forest Hill 28-6 last week.

Hazlehurst recorded its second straight win ofthe season last week with a 20-0 shutout of Region 6-3A foeCollins. Under head coach Vernon Perry, the Indians are 2-4 overalland 2-0 in the region. They face a tough Magee Trojan team.

Magee (4-2, 3-0) leads the region after crushing Crystal Springs22-6 last week.

Crystal Springs lines up against Richland in aregion road trip. Coach David Virgil’s Tigers (2-4, 1-2) is lookingfor a region win after losing to Magee last week.

Richland (3-3, 1-1) crushed Bailey 43-8 last Friday.

Last season, Crystal Springs clipped Richland 34-18.
