Wesson’s basketball players appear to be enjoying their seasonbecause the Cobras and Lady Cobras play the game with smiles ontheir faces. Friday night Wesson’s teams improved their records atthe expense of host Enterprise, winning the varsity girls game54-39 and the varsity boys game 70-58.

The Lady Cobras (17-5, 8-0) maintained their unbeaten record inDivision 6-2A as the regular season winds down. They could beseeded No. 1 in the division tournament that tips off Feb. 9, atEnterprise if they maintain their winning ways.

“I was pleased with our start,” said Wesson girls coach HughWebb. “We had a very good first quarter,” racing to a 24-6advantage.

Webb starts three juniors and two sophomores on a squad with noseniors. He also has size and depth on the team.

Sophomore Shauntay Walker, a 5-9 post player, worked inside for13 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Junior guard Macie Casealso scored 13 points. Junior forward Ann Shelby Davis added 12points, 4 steals and 4 rebounds to the win.

Webb gave his starters a 4-minute rest to start the fourthquarter as Wesson led by 23 points, 49-26.

“We had too many turnovers,” said Enterprise coach Jill Nations,scanning her statistics sheet. Her Lady Yellow Jackets (7-16, 3-6)turned the ball over 28 times.

Offensively, the Jackets got 11 points and 8 rebounds from LaceyOrr. Tara Paden chipped in 10 points.

The Cobras (9-14, 2-7), leading 35-30 at halftime, exploded inthe third quarter. They went on an 18-4 scoring spree, sparked by5-9 senior guard Josh Hood who scored 9 points in the run. Hefinished with a game-high 21 points and 5 assists.

Sophomore guard Kyle Cross followed Hood with 15 points and 4rebounds. Cody King had 13 points and 5 rebounds. Junior forwardTyler Lumley also had 3 points.

“We had a very aggressive start in the third quarter,” saidWesson coach Ron Kessler. “We blocked out and got somerebounds.

“Josh did an excellent job handling the ball for us. He’s a goodleader on the floor.”

The Jackets (9-14, 2-7) had lost a 2-point, 55-53 decision atWesson Dec. 19. Revenge was a motive but they couldn’t matchWesson’s marksmanship from the perimeter. The Cobras sacked 5 treyscompared to none for the Jackets.

Enterprise reduced an 18-point deficit to 10 points with 3:23left to play on a layup by Kevin Perry who finished with ateam-high 16 points. That was the closest Enterprise would come asLumley responded with 2 free throws and a short jumper. Hood alsosacked 2 freebies for insurance.

“The third quarter killed us,” said Enterprise first-year coachJohn Knight. “When you only score six points against a team likeWesson that shoots so well.

“If my kids keep improving, we will win some more games,” Knightnoted. He inherited a program that had managed just seven wins infive years.

Austin Everett, a 6-5 junior center, scored 11 points andgrabbed 5 rebounds for the Jackets. Russell Perry chipped in 11points and 13 rebounds.

Junior Varsity Action

Wesson defeated Enterprise 52-45 in a preliminary junior varsityboys game. Zack Fetcko scored 13 points, D.J. Coleman 13 and TerryBrown 12 for the Cobras.

Enterprise was led by Thomas Allen’s 23 points. Robert Baileynetted 9 points and Cody White 6.
