Hornets, Jackets tumble

MONTICELLO – The Enterprise Yellow Jackets and the Loyd StarHornets put up a good fight but the teams from Simpson County,Mendenhall and Magee, showcased their talents and made a cleansweep in basketball action Monday night in the Lawrence CountyThanksgiving Holiday Tournament,
In girls’ action, Mendenhall Lady Tigers were able to outlast theLady Jackets’ late rally and take a 57-52 victory. The Magee LadyTrojans made a second half surge to claim the lead over the LadyHornets and held on for a 49-39 win.
In boys’ action, the Mendenhall Tigers bedazzled the Jackets withtheir speed and height to crush Enterprise 72-23. The Magee Trojansdefense took the air out of the Hornets and cruised to a 75-43victory.
Loyd Star and Enterprise resume action today in the Lawrence CountyTournament, going head-to-head for an early taste of a LincolnCounty rivalry. The girls’ game tips off at 4 p.m. followed by theboys.
For more Tuesday basketball action, the Wayne County War Eaglestake on Magee in a girls and boys’ match beginning at 1 p.m. TheLawrence County Cougars will battle Mendenhall in the nightcap,starting 7 p.m. with the girls, followed by the boys.
Mendenhall 57, Enterprise 52
Senior guard Karla Beth Hux pumped in 17 points to lead the LadyJackets (2-5). She also had 5 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists.Kaitlin Moak provided 13 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals and 2assists.
“We need to rebound the ball a lot better and make our free throwsas well,” said Enterprise coach Jill Nations.
The Lady Tigers (2-1) had three players to score in double figures,Joselyn Sullivan provided a game-high 23 points. Briana Jones had16 points and LaQuitta McLaurin had 10.
Mendenhall 72, Enterprise 23
Senior forward Sam Furr was the leading scorer for the Jackets(0-7) with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
“Mendenhall has a very good team,” said Enterprise coach JohnKnight. “I know we are playing over our heads but hopefully it willprepare us for district.”
Mendenhall (1-1) had four players score 12 points each to lead theteam: Jared Tillman, Michael Robinson, Michael Enus and DarrellRobinson. Darrell Robinson, a 6-9 senior, recently signed ascholarship to play ball for DePaul University.
