Calcote becomes BHS Hit Man

Inside linebacker Kalen Calcote was Brookhaven’s Hit Man Fridaynight versus Franklin County. He accounted for 12 solo tackles andthree assists as the Panthers shut out Franklin County 20-0 intheir season opener at Meadville.
Calcote’s performance has earned him The DAILY LEADER’S DefensivePlayer of the Week recognition.
Ole Brook defensive coordinator Kelby Bowman said Calcote is anexceptional player. “Kalen works hard and he’s coachable. He takesfootball to heart. When he puts that helmet on, he’s ready to hitsomebody. He loves the game.”
Wearing jersey No. 9, the 5-foot-10, 185-pound junior has won hisspurs. He runs a 4.53 in the 40-yard dash. His max in the benchpress is 265 pounds. He squats with 355 pounds and power cleans235.
Calcote is the son of Tammy and the late Willis Calcote. His dadsuffered a fatal heart attack this summer at the age of 45. A wife,six sons and one daughter mourn his unexpected death.
Calcote said the victory over Franklin County was a team effort.”We lead 11 guys to the football. We played as a team.”
He said he enjoys playing inside linebacker. “It’s aggressive.That’s where all the hitting goes on.”
Free safety Chris Seals makes the adjustments on the field afterreceiving signals from Coach Bowman. Joining Calcote at linebackerare Shamonte Brooks, Jacoby Cooper and Jonah Hill. Calcote’s firstresponsibility is to read the run.
The linebackers get help up front from tackles Jawaun Merchant andMalcolm Stuart and ends Jabori Poole, Edward Gutter and ThevisCooper.
“Kalen always practices hard,” said Ole Brook head coach TuckerPeavey. “He’s very dependable and deserves to be rewarded.”
Calcote said he likes playing for Peavey. “He can be inspirationalto make you play well. I’ve learned a lot from Coach Bowman, too.You just have to sit there and listen to him.”
His younger brother, Chris, is a freshman defensive end for thePanthers. His other brothers are Richard, John, Wesley and Elijah.His sister’s name is Raquael.
Calcote’s favorite college team is Texas. He closely follows theexploits of San Diego Chargers linebacker Antonio Gates in theNational Football League.
