Halloween Safety Tips

* Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure shoesfit well and costumes are short enough to prevent tripping.
* Consider adding reflective tape and striping to costumes andtrick-or-treat bags for greater visibility.
* Secure emergency identification (name, address, phone number)discretely within the costume or on a bracelet.
* Because a mask can block eyesight, consider non-toxic,hypoallergenic makeup or a decorative hat as a safealternative.
* Make certain toy knives, swords, and guns are flexible enoughto prevent injury.
* Obtain flashlights with fresh batteries for all children andescorts.
* Remind your children of the “Stop, Drop, and Roll” principlein case their clothing catches on fire.
* Take extra effort to eliminate tripping hazards on your porchand walk way. Look for low tree limbs, support wires, and gardenhoses that might be dangerous to children running through theyard.
* A parent or responsible adult should accompany allchildren.
* Trick-or-Treat in a group.
* Remain on well-lit streets and stick to the sidewalks.
* Never enter a stranger’s home or car for a treat.
* Never eat unwrapped food items or open beverages that havebeen offered.
* No treats should be eaten until they have been thoroughlychecked by an adult.
* Law enforcement should be notified immediately of anysuspicious or unlawful activity.
