LCHS girls nip McComb

MCCOMB – Lawrence County’s Lady Cougars pushed home the winning run in the top the ninth and escaped with an extra-inning, 10-9 win against the McComb Lady Tigers. Elizabeth Smith was the winning pitcher with 7 strikeouts and 4 walks to her credit.
Lawrence County, coached by Meleah Howard, improved its record to 10-1. The Cougars make up a home date today against Loyd Star. The junior varsity game starts at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity at 6.
“We started the game out sloppy but we stepped up on offense and came through with some big hits,” said Howard. “It was an intense game and I’m very proud of my players. They never gave up.”
Two singles and a double by Sam Lee directed the Cougars’ 17-hit attack. Kristen Byrd and Alyssa Pendergrass each had 3 singles. Lexie Johnson doubled and singled. Julian Johnson singled twice. Alexsundria Thomas, Jamie Martin, Jazmin Thomas and Smith singled.
McComb took a 4-0 first-inning lead. LCHS went ahead 6-5 in the fourth but was down 8-7 after the fifth.
