Gulf Coast women take pair from Co-Lin

PERKINSTON — The Co-Lin Lady Wolves dropped South Divisionsoftball doubleheader to the Gulf Coast Lady Bulldogs Thursdayafternoon. Gulf Coast downed CO-Lin 10-0 in the opener and 6-1 inthe finale.
“We are 5-4 in division play after the first round,” said Co-Linhead coach Allen Kent. “We must take care of business from here onout in order to make the playoffs.”
In the recent NJCAA poll, Gulf Coast is No. 2, Co-Lin is No. 12and Jones County is No. 13.
Gulf Coast 10, Co-Lin 0
Gulf Coast hit a solo home run in the first inning and a 3-runshot in the third to push its lead to 5-0 off a Co-Lin errors and 2bloop hits.
In the fourth, Co-Lin made 2 errors and the Lady Bulldogs cashedin 5 more runs for a 10-0 lead.
“They got the hits when they needed them,” said Kent. “They alsotook full advantage or our errors. Ashley Sykes sustained an ankleinjury, breaking off a double play. Her status isquestionable.”
The Lady Wolves left 7 runners stranded in the first four inningand only collected 2 hits. Singling were Kayla Crochet, AshleySykes and Lauren Smith.
Crochet (9-3) took the loss, giving up 6 earned runs in 4innings. She allowed 8 hits, striking out 4, walking 1 and hitting1 batter.
Gulf Coast 6, Co-Lin 1
Emily Langley led off with a double and Candace Braxton reachedbase on an error. Annie Selman singled home Langley but Braxton gotpicked off third base to end the scoring threat.
The momentum continued to swing as Co-Lin committed 3 errors inthe bottom of the third, giving Gulf Coast a 2-1 lead. A hitbatsman and a home run stretched the lead to 4-1 in the fourth.
Gulf Coast added 2 more runs on 2 hits in the sixth.
Co-Lin managed just 3 hits in the second contest. Hitting safelywas Allyson Wallace.
Meleah Brown (5-3) took the loss, allowing 4 earned runs on 6hits. Brown walked 3 batters, hit 1 batter and struck out 9.
