Free throws lift Wolves; Scott pumps in 38 points

WESSON – Free-throw shooting can work to a team’s advantage intwo ways. A team can score extra points and can put the otherteam’s players in foul trouble as the Co-Lin Wolves did to theDelgado Community College (La.) Dolphins Tuesday night in MullenGymnasium.

The Wolves were 37 of 43 from the free-throw line as they posteda 90-76 win over the Dolphins in their final game of 2002.Sophomore guard Jason Scott directed the Wolves with a game-high 38points. Scott, a graduate of Ferriday (La.) High School, was22-of-24 from the free-throw line, going a perfect 7-for-7 in thefirst half with 15 points.

Co-Lin, coached by Dennis Sims, improved to 5-7 overall butremains 0-2 in South Division play. Delgado fell to 6-9 on theseason.

“We made our free throws,” said Sims, “We got other people infoul trouble. It worked our way.”

The teams exchanged leads in the first half. Delgado’s leadingscorer, sophomore guard Sam Martin, hit a three-pointer at thebuzzer to tie the game at 39-all at halftime. Martin finished with18 points before fouling out with 3:54 left in the game.

With 10:04 left in the second half, the Wolves began to takecontrol. A pair of free throws by Scott broke a 59-all tie with theDolphins to give the Wolves a 61-59 lead. Scott followed up withfour more freebies and a field goal to give Co-Lin a 67-62advantage at the 7:30 mark.

Scott’s free throws at the 7:34 mark were on a technicalassessed against Dolphin men’s coach Tommy Smith who argued acharging call against Martin.

Delgado cut the deficit to six points, 76-69, with 4:24 left onthe clock but Co-Lin responded with two free throws from sophomoreguard Jerimie Collier with 3:55 left for a nine-point, 78-69lead.

“We had a better second half than first half,” added Sims.”We’ve won our last four games at home.”

Adding support to the Co-Lin win with 15 points was Collier whohad six points at halftime. Carl Minor led off the backboards withnine rebounds. Tim Horton finished with five rebounds.

Scoring 17 points was Hugo Rangel for the Dolphins from NewOrleans. Lonnie Vasquez netted 10 points. Dwight Wilkins pulleddown six rebounds.

Following holidays, Co-Lin hits the road to Delgado on Jan. 9,2003.
