MONTICELLO – When it comes to offense, the Lawrence CountyCougars are rewriting the record book in Region 6-4A. Josh Cameron,junior running back for the Lawrence County Cougars, is one of thehorses in the LCHS stable.

Against Jefferson County last Friday night, Cameron rushed for259 yards on 25 carries and scored 3 touchdowns in a 33-30 triumph.That performance earned Cameron The DAILY LEADER’s Offensive Playerof the Week recognition.

LCHS head coach Mike Davis praised Cameron’s efforts. “Josh is acomplete player. Everybody sees him run hard. The little thingsthat he does are very good, too. He has the blocking skills andgood hands. He’s such a hard-working kid, too.”

Cameron (5-11, 190, jr.) runs a 4.5 in the 40-yard dash and isstrong in the weight room. He bench presses 300 pounds and squatswith 370. He was on the LCHS powerlifting team last year.

“Weightlifting is very important,” said Cameron. “Besides sizeand strength, it makes me run faster, too.”

Cameron said he enjoys associating with the LCHS footballcoaches. “We have a young coaching staff but we have the bestcoaching staff. They care about us as individuals; how we carryourselves and how we behave.”

Cameron said he was happy to receive the recognition but hewanted to share the glory with his teammates. “I couldn’t do itwithout my offensive line. They deserve all the credit.”

That group of linemen includes Monterio Taylor, Joshua (Buck)Magee, Rickey Funchess, Carlton Parkman, Jamie McCardle and centerCody Killingsworth.

Asked about the Jefferson County game and the big numbers heamassed, Cameron said he was encouraged by his teammates. “When wewere in the huddle, my offensive line pumped me up. They said theholes were there for me to run through.”

Lawrence County lost its season opener at Class 5A Petal,victimized by fumbles. Since that game, the Cougars have won 6 in arow and are unbeaten in the Region 6-4A race.

“We had some tough times at first but we have been comingtogether as a team,” said Cameron. “We are playing a lotbetter.”

He sees more room for improvement. “I play hard in every gamebut I have to cut down on my two fumbles,” said Cameron.

With All-State senior running back Kendrick Hardy directing theLCHS offensive attack, Matthew Wells working at the other wingback,and quarterback Adam Watson calling signals, the Cougars haveproduced some impressive numbers. They scored 63 points in winsover Brookhaven and McComb. They chalked up 62 versus Florence and55 versus Mendenhall.

“The Wing-T offense is the best we can have,” said Cameron. “Weconfuse a lot of people.”

Two of his uncles are Shelva Cameron and Ricky Cameron, formerBrookhaven High athletes who starred in the mid 1970s. His parentsare Demond Cameron and Melissa Johnson. His dad played football forLawrence County.

When he relaxes in front of the TV on Saturdays, Cameron said heenjoys watching the Ole Miss Rebels and LSU Tigers compete in therugged SEC. His favorite NFL team is the Pittsburgh Steelers. Hisfavorite NFL player is Glen Portis of the Washington Redskins.
