Hornets ease past Seminary

Pitcher Justin Whatley tossed a 5-hitter and the Loyd StarHornets beat Seminary 3-2 Monday in the Seminary Tournament.Whatley gave up 2 runs on 5 hits, struck out 9 and walked 5. Heallowed 3 singles and a double.
“Justin started off kind of shaky,” said Loyd Star coachJonathan Breakfield. “After he gave up two runs in the firstinning, he settled down and got stronger as the game went on.”
Loyd Star (3-0) resumes play Saturday at Seminary. The Hornetsplay West Marion at 9:30 a.m. and North Forrest at noon.
Seminary starter Andrew McKenzie struck out Loyd Star’s first 7batters. Chris Hand replaced McKenzie and absorbed the loss.
The Hornets finished with 4 hits. Centerfielder Michael Britthomered and singled. Whatley tripled. Kyle James singled.
In the sixth, Whatley tripled and scored on a throwing error tohome plate, scoring the winning run.
