Two join race for District 2 supervisor

District 2 was the popular place last week as two candidatesjoined the race to be that area’s supervisor, according toqualifying papers in the Lincoln County Circuit Clerk’s office.

John W. Norton, of 3024 Old Malcum Road, and Tommy McCullough,of 3201 Nola Road, were the only two people to join races in thisyear’s county elections.

Other candidates in the District 2 race include incumbent BobbyJ. Watts and Clarence Edwards. All are running as Democrats.

In a district contest, Dewitt “Dee” Bates Jr., Pike Countyprosecutor, qualified in the race for 14th Circuit Court Districtdistrict attorney. Other Democratic primary qualifiers includeNelson Estess and Gus Sermos.

The 14th District includes Lincoln, Pike and Walthall counties.Incumbent DA Danny Smith is running for state representative ofDistrict 97.

So far, 50 candidates have thrown their hats into the ring incontests for 19 elected county and district offices on this year’sballot. The qualifying deadline is Saturday, March 1.

There are no candidates yet in the race for state representativeof District 92. Incumbent Dr. Jim Barnett said Friday that heplanned on qualifying in the near future.

“It’s proving to be an interesting election year,” said DeputyCircuit Clerk Marian James. “There are many new peoplequalifying.”

James encouraged candidates to get familiar with the duties ofthe office they are seeking.

“They should really get in there and see what’s going on,” Jamessaid. “It looks easy from the outside.”

Other races and candidates so far include (all are running inthe Democratic primary unless noted):

* Chancery Clerk – incumbent Tillmon Bishop, Charles “Charlie”Hart and L. Ralph Smith.

* Circuit Clerk – incumbent Terry Lynn (Case) Watkins.

* Tax Assessor-Collector – incumbent Nancy Reeves Jordan.

* Sheriff – incumbent Lynn Boyte, Post 1 Constable WileyCalcote, Robert Berry, Don Evans and James Williams Jr. andRepublican Klareenca (Kris) Hutcherson.

* Coroner – incumbent Clay McMorris and Sherry DouglasWilliams.

* Superintendent of Education – incumbent Perry Miller and JasonR. Case.

* District 1 Supervisor – Dorsey Cameron Jr. and the Rev. JerryL. Wilson, Alex H. Robinson Sr. and Andrew Graham.

* District 3 Supervisor – incumbent Nolan Earl Williamson andHollis Kelly.

* District 4 Supervisor – incumbent W.D. “Doug” Moak and RichardCarroll Smith.

* District 5 Supervisor – incumbent Gary Walker, Douglas Falvey,Bob K. Smith and Darrell Britt.

* Post 1 Justice Court Judge – incumbent Judy Martin andRepublican Ricky Thibodeaux.

* Post 2 Justice Court Judge – incumbent B.J. Price.

* Post 1 Constable – Donald R. (Don) Smith, Charles Ralph SmithJr., Bateman Stilley, John (Buster) Hickman, John Earl Washingtonand Republican Donald Golmon.

* Post 2 Constable – incumbent Lavon Boyd, Charles B. Welch andMike Milholen.

* State Representative, District 53 – incumbent Bobby Moak andRichard Baker III, who is running as a Republican.

* State Senate, District 39 – incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith andW.L. Rayborn.

The first party primaries are scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 5.Party primary runoffs, where necessary, will be held Tuesday, Aug.26.

Party primary winners will go on to face each other in thegeneral election on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
