The Lincoln County School District board oftrustees Tuesday rejected bids on combination gymnasium/classroomfacilities at two district campuses.
The exact breakdown for each building was not available, butSuperintendent Terry Brister said bids for the two gym/classroomfacilities for Bogue Chitto and Enterprise totaled around $6.4million. The superintendent indicated the bid effort wasspeculative to see if the project could be done feasibly.
“What we were doing was seeing if we could build them with theclassrooms,” Brister said of the gym projects.
Brister said the idea was to construct new buildings, with spacebelow the gyms’ floorsbeing utilized for classrooms.
“It wasn’t the gyms that would cost that much, it was theclassrooms underneath, too,” Brister said.
After hearing the bid totals, the board opted against pursuing theprojects in that fashion.
“We’re not going to pay that kind of money for two gyms,” saidBrister, adding that the district will seek new bids for gyms onlyin about a month. “It will be more economical for the taxpayer thatway.”
Brister said officials would look at adding classroom space in thefuture as it is needed.
In other business during Tuesday afternoon’s brief meeting, boardmembers handled a number of routine items and Brister updated theboard on plans for state testing in March.
“We’re looking at some things and getting geared up for testing,”Brister said.
