Lady Panthers romp; Terry boys realize revenge

Terry boys coach John Neal still remembered last season’sovertime loss at Brookhaven. Neal got some belated satisfactionTuesday night as his Bulldogs rallied for a 77-73 win over thePanthers in Sinclair Gymnasium.

In the varsity girls game, Brookhaven trounced Terry 73-43, ledby Shameka Gilmore’s 13 points. In a preliminary JV girls game,Brookhaven romped to a 48-20 win.

Brookhaven continues its homestand Friday night, hosting SouthPike for a tripleheader.

The Panthers (8-2) carried a 53-51 lead into the fourthquarter but it was short-lived. Terry took a 4-point, 67-63 lead ona jumper by A.J. Oliver. The Bulldogs (9-4) got a big boost fromJamie Mack who scored 10 of his game-high 20 points in the fourthquarter.

“This was a sweet victory for us,” said Neal. “We camedown here last year and lost in overtime. Mack has been playingpretty steady for us.”

Mack had plenty of help as Jarret Brown chipped in 15points and Robert Fortson and A.J. Oliver 14 apiece. Guard PatrickHorton finished with 10 points, giving the Bulldogs a 73-70 leadafter Mack sacked a trey from the top of the key for a 71-70advantage and 1:16 left in the game.

The Panthers were outrebounded and outquicked by Terry.They only hit 13 of 27 free throw attempts which led to theirdemise.

“When you shoot free throws like we did, you can’t beata good team,” said Brookhaven boys coach Dan Presley. “We playedhard but we got in foul trouble.

“I told our kids that Terry would come in here and getafter us.”

Brookhaven got 19 points from senior guard Fred Mackabeeand 18 from guard Dexter Middleton. In the third quarter, thePanthers had built a 4-point, 53-49 lead on a dunk by Mackabee anda layup by Lazeric Perkins.

The Lady Panthers (8-1) exploded for 26 second-quarterpoints and led Terry 41-13 at halftime. Junior center Ayana Tillmanfinished with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Tiffany Watkins chipped in11 points and Anna Autman had 5 rebounds. Gilmore made 5steals.

“Some of our girls have really improved their shooting,”said Brookhaven girls coach Ronald Gill. “We must continue to getbetter.”

Gill was able to substitute early and 11 of his 12players put points on the scoreboard. Brookhaven led 52-18 on atrey by Watkins and 2:05 left in the third frame.

“Our press has been doing a good job,” said Gill. Hisgirls accounted for 17 steals

The Lady Panthers sank 6 treys, led by Watkins and MandyVinson who had 2 apiece. As a team they were 6 of 18 from 3-pointrange.

Terry, coached by Eddie Pickle and Meg Hegwood, got 10points from April McElroy.

In the JV girls game, Brookhaven was led by Autman’s 18points.
