Five suspects sought in connection with an early Sunday morning high-speed chase in Jefferson County were apprehended Monday afternoon in Brookhaven.

The chase began Sunday morning in Jefferson County when a sheriff’s deputy tried to stop a sports utility vehicle after it made an erratic turn, according to Jefferson County Sheriff Peter Walker.

When the officer attempted to make the stop, the SUV fled. Chase speeds reached up to 100 miles per hour, Walker said.

At one point, the SUV stopped and four of the suspects left the vehicle and fled on foot in different directions.

According to Walker, while the deputy was running the information on the driver, at least one of the suspects who had fled the vehicle began firing on the deputy.

The patrol vehicle was hit several times. The officer was not injured, Walker said, but the SUV was able to speed away.

The suspects were relocated in Brookhaven Monday when at least one was attempting to get on a northbound Amtrak train.

“We think a couple were trying to get out of town because we had warrants for their arrests,” said Walker.

Brookhaven police planned to make the arrests at the train station. However, the suspects fled again when police units arrived at the station.

The suspects were pursued and eventually stopped on Highway 550 around 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Police found luggage as well as about 24 grams of marijuana in a brown paper bag, according to Brookhaven Police Chief Pap Henderson.

Those arrested were Yolanda Barnes, 33, of 129 Barnes Lane, and Demetriah Ward Barnes, 25, of 3343 Stampley Road, both of Fayette, who were charged with aiding and abetting; Travis Barnes, 25, of 3343 Stampley Road, who was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, fleeing, and shooting into a motor vehicle; William Gaines, 22, no address listed, who was charged with aggravated assault and shooting into a motor vehicle; and Paris Ward, 22, who was charged with shooting into a motor vehicle and two counts of aggravated assault.

“We have been pursuing some of these people for a while,” said Walker. “We had thought the woman (Yolanda Barnes) who owned the vehicle had been distributing drugs.”

Citing an ongoing investigation, Walker said he requested the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics’ assistance regarding the marijuana found in Yolanda Barnes’ vehicle. Information on any drug-related charges was not available.

Combining to make Monday’s arrests were the Brookhaven Police Department, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office.
