Bettye Jayne Hudson Martin, 85, died Oct.4, 2011, at her home in Wesson. She was born Jan. 26, 1926, at thehome of her grandparents, Jabez Jesse Havers and Annie ElizaMurrell Havers, at 402 Burke St. in McComb.

    Mrs. Martin graduated from McComb High School in 1945. As theschool had burned, some courses were taught at the CountyFairgrounds. Thus, hers was known as “the class that graduated fromthe cattle barn.” She was married to Clinton Wallace Martin Sr. onMay 19, 1945. She retired from J.C. Penney, Co. in 1982. Afterretirement, she traveled to 49 states, Canada, Mexico and severalEuropean countries. She also pursued her many hobbies.

    For most of her life, she resided in McComb, before moving toWesson in 1999. With the help of her husband, she and Irma C.Lampton coauthored “Partial History of the Wiley Martin (Oct. 27,1831-Feb 1885) and Mary L. Quin Martin (Dec. 18, 1836-Oct. 1899)Family.” She contributed to Arthur and Helen Rushing Jones’s book,”Matthew Rushing Descendants in South Mississippi 1810-1995″ andresearched the Havers and Murrell families. She was a member ofCentenary United Methodist Church of McComb and later DecellMemorial United Methodist Church of Wesson. In recent years, shewas a member of the United Methodist Women, 50+ Club, Garden Club,Southwest Mississippi Genealogical Society and the BrookhavenAnimal Rescue League. She will be remembered as a devoted wife andmother and for her life-long affection to cats. 

    Preceding her in death were her parents, William Henry “Harry”Hudson and Mable Clare Havers Hudson; and husband. 

    Survivors include her daughter, Gerry Martin Daughdrill andhusband, Dr. Roy Wilson Daughdrill, of Wesson; son, Dr. ClintonMartin Jr., of Ocean Springs; grandson, Jaron Martin, of Gulfport;sister, Gloria H. Jones, of McComb; and other relatives andfriends.

    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Decell Memorial UnitedMethodist Church, P.O. Box 65, Wesson, MS 39191; HospiceMinistries, 397 Brookhaven St., Brookhaven, MS 39603; or theBrookhaven Animal Rescue League, P.O. Box 3477, Brookhaven, MS39603.

    Visitation will be Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011, from 1 p.m. until timeof service at 2 p.m. at Decell Memorial United Methodist Church.Graveside service will follow at Hollywood Cemetery in McComb.
