Musical variety on tap for New Year’s Eve

Dixieland jazz, golden oldies, swing era, barber shop harmonyand old-time fiddling will be among the musical styles showcasedwhen the Brookhaven Trust puts on the huge street party, “A Nighton the Town,” for New Year’s Eve.
The streets of downtown Brookhaven will be a kaleidoscope ofmusic from 9 p.m. until midnight as five different groups andindividuals perform for the fundraiser benefitting the historicpreservation and arts education organization. There will also be alive auction of investment-quality artwork beginning at 10 p.m.
Tickets, which are $25 per person, are available from theBrookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce at (601)833-1411.Credit cards may be used to purchase tickets.
Jackson tunemeister Bill Cook will liven up the dance floor inthe Old Depot as he offers up an evening of dance favorites thatwill get everyone into a holiday mood. Standards that put revelersinto an Auld Lang Syne state of mind are the fare for hisinimitable one-man performances.
Vince Massimino of Jackson will perform some down-home fiddlingat the rustic Foster-Smith Log Cabin on Whitworth Avenue, whichwill be closed to only pedestrians for the night.
Massimino, who is also assistant concertmaster for theMississippi Symphony Orchestra, and is experienced in a wide rangeof musical genres, from pop to “Big Al’s Hot Dance Orchestra” toAppalachian tunes that recall a simpler time, will perform ruralpieces that befit the charm of the 1880s log structure. He willalso perform several classical pieces during the Live Art Auctionin the State Bank Room.
Dixieland is the bill of fare when Jackson’s Bourbon StreetJunior High Jazz Band performs at Trustmark Bank. Formed 13 yearsago to entertain at the New Bourbon Street Jazz Society, whichmeets once a month to listen and appreciate all the old DixielandJazz tunes, this group of eager Dixieland Jazz wannabees hasperformed all across Mississippi.
Founder Dan Wright, owner of Wright Music Company in Jacksonleads the group of jazz musicians who have learned to feel theirmusic as they play just as French Quarter legends did before them.Toe-tapping is allowed and dancing is encouraged when theyplay.
Members are: Dan Wright, piano; Bob Pilcher, Jr., trombone;Bruce Carter, drums; Randy Dickerson, trumpet & flugelhorn; andRichard Brown, bass.
Brookhaven’s own Steve Russell, a renowned keyboardist andteacher, will be offering a medley of Swing-era tunes asticket-holders check-in at the historic Old City Hall/Chamber ofCommerce building to get their party ID, their bidding numbers forthe auction, and perhaps enjoy a quick tour of the structure, whichis the Trust’s next restoration project.
Tom Moak of Brookhaven, a noted barber shop quartet singer, willlead the singing as everyone comes together under the “Homeseeker’sParadise” sign to ring in the New Year with Auld Lang Syne. Thepatriotic, “God Bless America” will also be performed to recall thetragic events of this past year.
Emcee for the evening’s events will be Chuck Ivey of Brookhaven,the voice of WRQO, Q-102 FM radio station. A fixture on southwestMississippi airwaves for decades, Ivey will offer his own uniquetake on sending out the Old Year.
