Wesson’s Peets aims for successful season

WESSON — Chance Peets is hoping his senior year as a member ofthe Wesson football team will be a successful one. Considering thatPeets hasn’t played football since junior high, he has become animmediate impact player.
In Wesson’s 34-18 win over Richland last Friday night, Peetsdirected the Cobra defense with 11 tackles and intercepted twopasses. The Cobras are unbeaten with a 2-0 record on theseason.
For his accomplishments, Peets has been selected The DAILYLEADER’S Defensive Player of the Week.
“It feels good,” said Peets, who plays free safety. “It’s a realhonor. It’s my first year to play (high school football).”
Peets, who stands 5-foot-9 and weighs 160 pounds, said he enjoysthe physical contact.
“Peets is a hard-working kid,” said Wesson head football coachTommy Clopton. “He does a good job being the field general ondefense.
“He’s the kind of kid coaches like to coach,” continued Clopton.”We are looking forward to bigger and better things from him eachweek.
Peets talked about playing free safety. “I am supposed to lookfor the passer. And not let anyone get behind me.”
Peets also explained how he intercepted the two Richlandpasses.
“The first one, I was behind him (receiver). “Then I ran up infront of him and caught it.” He had an 18-yard return on the firsttheft.
The second pass interception was similar as Peets knew theRangers were going to throw because they were trailing, with littletime left to play.
“I just ran up and caught it,” stated Peets. He fell afterpicking off the football and had no return yardage.
Peets said he appreciates how much his defensive teammates havehelped him readjust to football again.
Playing on defense for the Cobras are Josh Sanders and PhillipFreeman at end, John Knight and Benton Bell at tackle, Bobby Harrisand John Michael Cliburn at inside linebacker, Peets at freesafety, Roy Williams at strong safety, Mason Warren at whip andMicah Davis and Otho Smith at cornerback. Strong safety MackJackson sustained an injury and is out of action. Williams, whoplayed the whip position, replaced Jackson at strong safety. Warrentook over the whip spot.
“We have a strong defense,” explained Peets. “Our line gets tothe ball real good. The defense puts a lot of pressure on thequarterback.”
Peets is following a sports tradition set by his father,William, and older brother, Christopher. Both played baseball forthe Cobras as he does. Peets also plays for the basketballteam.
In his free time, Peets likes to hunt and play sports with hisfriends. He said his biggest kill was a 10-point buck.
Peets and his family are Catholic and attend St. Francis ofAssisi Church in Brookhaven.
“I would like to thank my coaches and my team,” added Peets.”They get me ready for the game. My teammates help me.”
Peets added that he wished he had played high school footballhis junior year.
Coach Clopton agreed, “So do I.”
