Wolves split at Gulf Coast

PERKINSTON — Co-Lin picked up the pieces Saturday afternoonafter an opening 11-0 loss to the Gulf Coast Community CollegeBulldogs. The Wolves produced a complete turnaround in the nightcapas Cole Zumbro slugged two home runs and beat the powerful Bulldogs11-7.

The loss left Gulf Coast at 27-5 overall and 5-1 in the SouthDivision. Co-Lin climbed to 20-10 and 4-2.

Co-Lin hosts Southwest Tuesday, starting at 4 p.m. on SullivanField.

“Our guys set the tone and really responded in the second game,”said Co-Lin head coach Keith Case. “It was a tough game and a toughweek for us.”

Gulf Coast 11, Co-Lin 0

The Bulldogs got a 2-run homer by Brian Seymour in the fifth toend the game. Centerfielder Sal Aleman had 3 hits, including 2doubles.

Co-Lin was limited to 3 hits, singles by Keeyon Sanders, JeffreyWaycaster and Justin Sykes.

Winning pitcher Myles Clark tossed a 3-hitter. He fanned 2batters and walked none.

Boycee Varnes started on the mound for Co-Lin and was replacedby Jacob Leggett in the third.

“We didn’t start the game very well and they hit the ball hard,”said Case. “We are having to shift some people around because ofinjuries.”

Catcher Diego Nucete missed the game due to a stone bruise.First baseman Jody Britt was moved to the outfield because of ashoulder injury. Rightfielder and leadoff batter Casey Ginn is outfor possibly four weeks due to a broken jaw sustained inWednesday’s twinbill at Pearl River. Ginn had surgery Thursday.

Co-Lin 11, Gulf Coast 6

Matthew Fox was the winning pitcher in relief of starter ColbyBeach. In 3 innings, Fox gave up 3 runs on 5 hits, fanned 3 andwalked none. Ryan Belanger pitched the seventh and gave up 1hit.

Zumbro powered the Wolves with 2 homers and an RBI double. Hehit a 3-run homer in the 5th and 2-run homer in the 6th.

“Cole had a great day at the plate,” said Case. “Those homerswere big blows for us.”

The momentum changed when Zumbro’s fifth inning homer clearedthe fence to regain the lead. The Wolves also got a key double playwhen Chris Rivers hit a line drive to Waycaster in left field.Waycaster threw out Gunter O’Neal who was going for third.

“That double play was big for us,” said Case.

Freshman Ben Sandifer filled in for Britt at first base andcontributed a double and a single. Shortstop Aaron Guillotcollected 3 hits. Alleman had 2 hits.

Collecting singles for Co-Lin were Patrick Williams, Sykes,Sanders and Waycaster.
