BA, Copiah encounter tough road tests

The Brookhaven Academy Cougars hit the road Friday night toFranklinton, La., for a non-district game with the Bowling GreenBuccaneers. The game starts at 7 p.m.

In other academy action, Copiah travels to Rayfield, La., tomeet Riverfield and Parklane is on the road toMadison-Ridgeland.

Having already won the District 4-AA crown, Brookhaven (4-3,3-0) battles Bowling Green. The Buccaneers (4-3, 2-2) are out ofDistrict 5-AA and fell to Oak Forest 23-20 last week.

The Cougars, coached by Bo Milton, shut out Riverfield, La.,21-0 last week with defense.

The Cougar defense was powered by Nathaniel Sbravati with 11tackles. Kolby Byrd made 10 stops. Finishing with 9 stops wasJeremy James. The defense held Raider quarterback Sherwood Ransomto minus-36 yards in 10 attempts.

“Bowling Green is very physical,” said Milton. “They lost tosome really good football teams. They’ve lost their last twodistrict games. It’s homecoming down there. They are a good ballteam. They could be 5-2 or 6-1 right now. Their quarterback CashCooley (5-10, 153) is real good. His brother, Kasey (5-7, 150), isa senior running back. They have good hard-nosed runningbacks.”

“Their defense runs out of the Power I, unbalanced,” addedMilton.

Against Riverfield last week, Brookhaven was led by quarterbackDaniel Lofton with 9 carries for 20 yards. Lofton completed 6 of 11passes for 90 yards and a touchdown.

Starting on the offensive line for the Cougars are PatrickWallace at left tackle, Garrett Posey at left guard, Caleb Williamsat center, Will Gatlin at right tackle and Caleb Covington at rightguard.

“It’s going to be a good physical ball game,” added Milton.

Copiah travels to Rayville, La, to tangle withthe Riverfield Raiders in non-district action. The Gallman-basedColonels are under the direction of first-year head coach ScottyCline. Copiah (6-1, 1-1) got its first district win last Fridaywith a 41-7 cakewalk over the Prentiss Christian School Saints.

Colonel senior quarterback Daniel Sims completed 5 of 11 passesfor 103 yards including 3 touchdowns in the win over PrentissChristian. Bryce Guess caught passes for a caught a 47-yard TD anda 10-yard TD. Hunter Greer caught the other pass for a 4-yardtouchdown.

Defensively, linebacker Alex Guess led the Colonels with 6tackles. Bryce Guess followed with 4 tackles.

Parklane handed Adams County Christian School a35-6 whipping last Friday. Coach Charlie Newlon’s Pioneers (3-3,1-2) visit the Madison-Ridgeland Academy Patriots (4-2, 3-0) in aDistrict 1-AAA (Division 1) next.

MRA knocked off Hillcrest Christian 36-13 last week.

Last year, MRA nipped Parklane 27-26.
