LCHS rally sinks Wesson

WESSON – The Lawrence County Cougars defeated the Wesson Cobras14-5 in high school baseball action Saturday afternoon. The Cougarsovercame an early deficit with a 7-run outburst in the third, and a4-run outburst in the fourth, to claim a season split with Wesson.The Cobras defeated Lawrence County in a 9-inning affair earlier inthe season.
Coach Chris Clark’s Cougars improved to 9-12 with the win, whileHugh Knight’s Cobras fell to 9-6. Both teams entered Saturday’sgame a bit thin on pitching depth, having played hard-foughtdivision games during the week. Both teams will continue divisionplay on Tuesday.
Lawrence County’s bats erupted on Saturday. LCHS banged out14hits, with leftfielder Casey Williams going 4 for 5 in the game.Jonathan Stephens and Luke Watts both banged homeruns for thevisitors.
A Joseph Evans double and Williams’s RBI single gave LawrenceCounty a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Wesson responded with 3runs on 3 hits in the bottom half. Wade Williams had a single, NickGunter a triple, and Brian Channell crushed a homerun.
Lawrence County starter Jake Russell settled in after that.While he held Wesson in check, the Cougars fought back with moreruns. LCHS erupted for 7 runs in the third. Stephens’s 3-run homerwas the big blow. Joseph Evans had a 2-run single, and TrentHartzog, a double, in the frame.
In the fourth, Luke Watts cracked a 3-run homer, giving theCougars a 12-3 lead. Wesson battled back with 2 in the bottom ofthe fourth, but 12-5 was as close as the Cobras ever got. MasonDouglass led off the inning with a triple. Brett Selman, NickGunter, and Channell each had singles.
Williams’s 4-hit afternoon led Lawrence County’s offensiveassault. Hartzog, Stephens, and Watts each had 2 hits. Evans,Russell, Klein Harbour, and Jeremy Williams also had hits.
Russell started a worked 4-plus innings to earn the win. Heallowed 8 hits, walked 4, and struck out 7. Hartzog relieved in a2-on, none-out jam in the fifth, and was able to pitch the Cougarsout of it. In 3 scoreless innings, he struck out 1, walked 3, anddid not allow a hit.
Gunter, Channell, and Douglass led Wesson with 2 hits each.Brett Selman and Wade Williams also had hits.
Cory Puckett started for Wesson and worked 2 and 2/3 innings. Hewas relieved in the third by Selman, who finished the game. The duostruck out 3, while walking 7, and allowing 14 hits.
