Co-Lin women put away East Central

WESSON — Revenge was sweet for the Co-Lin Lady Wolves Thursdaynight in Mullen Gymnasium. The Lady Wolves played their best gameof the season and came away with a lopsided 78-43 South Divisionwin over the East Central Lady Warriors. Co-Lin fell to EastCentral 60-59 back in Decatur on Jan. 14.
With the victory, Co-Lin improved to 6-4 in the division and15-5 on the season. East Central, coached by Billy Smith, fell to7-3 in division play and 17-4 overall.
Co-Lin travels to Meridian Monday night for another divisiondoubleheader. The women begin play at 6 p.m. followed by themen.
“We just had a great effort offensively tonight,” said Co-Linwomen’s coach Gwyn Young. “We worked better as a team tonight.”
Forward Kristin Ellis, a 5-11 sophomore from Vicksburg, kickedoff the start of the game with a trey and a free throw for a quick3-0 lead at the 19:44 mark. Guard Reisha Bullock, a 5-9 sophomorefrom Kenner, La., nailed her first of two treys to push the hosts’lead to 6-0 with 18:45 on the clock. Ellis came back with a2-pointer to give Co-Lin an 8-0 lead before East Central got on thescoreboard. Bullock was the leading scorer with 18 points and 4rebounds. Ellis followed with 17 points, 3 rebounds and 2steals.
At the 16:36 mark, Rashima Jenkins, a 5-9, freshman forward fromBossier City, La., scored the first points for the Lady Warriors tocut the Lady Wolves’ lead to 8-2.
With 10:10 left in the first half, East Central tied the game at12-all on a pair of free throws from sophomore guard JordonPatterson of Aberdeen. This was the only time the Lady Warriorswould tie the Lady Wolves. Co-Lin went on a 21-7 scoring run tocarry a 33-19 lead in at the half.
“We did a real good job handling their press,” said Young. “Weran our own press and got a lot of unforced turnovers.”
At the 17:11 mark in the second half, Co-Lin held a 20-point,41-21, lead following a pair of free throws by Ellis. With 6:33remaining in the game, Bullock netted 2 free throws to give thehosts a 30-point, 66-36, lead over the visitors.
“Yashunda Williams came off the bench and played her best gameof the year,” added Young. Williams, a 6-2 freshman forward fromHazlehurst, finished with 10 points, and 7 rebounds.
According to Young, Co-Lin got 28 points from the bench lastnight. “TeAirra Wilbert (of Hazlehurst) just had 2 points but shemade a lot of plays tonight. Sondra Moncure (of Hinds AHS) andShrica Ward (of Forest Hill) did well.”
For East Central, Jenkins led with 12 points and 10 rebounds.Mystee Dale pumped in 10 points and grabbed 4 rebounds.
