A Waste Management employee from McComb was killed Tuesdayevening on Highway 51 in a three-vehicle accident that blocked thehighway north of Summit for approximately six hours, authoritiessaid.

Steven A. Young, 39, was pronounced dead at the scene by PikeCounty Coroner Percy Pittman. Three others received minor injuriesin the accident about 1.5 miles north of Summit.

Young was a passenger on the back of a garbage truck driven byO.C. Montgomery, 62, of Summit, when the truck stopped to pick up aload of trash around 6:30 p.m.

A passenger car driven by John Clifton Hudson, 51, of Tucson,Ariz., and a loaded commercial log truck driven by Andrew Jagers,53, of Summit, were behind the garbage truck, said Master Sgt.Albert Johnson of Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol Troop M.

Johnson said Jagers’ truck struck Hudson’s car and forced itinto the garbage truck. The log truck overturned and spilled itsload across the highway.

“We still have a lot of unanswered questions,” said Johnson,citing an ongoing investigation.

Hudson and Montgomery were transported to Southwest MississippiRegional Medical Center in McComb where they were treated for minorinjuries and released, Johnson said. Jagers received minorinjuries, but was released at the accident scene.

Highway 51 was blocked for approximately six hours as workersbrought in recovery equipment and cleared the road.
