Hood’s 65 awesome at Wolf Hollow

WESSON — Warren Hood played the Wolf Hollow Golf Club like heowned it Wednesday afternoon. The 5-foot-11, 145-pound Wessonjunior shot a sizzling 7-under par 65, leading the Cobras to theDivision 3-2A Tournament championship.
Hood, match medalist, oudueled Freddie Janneck (73) of MadisonSt. Joseph for top individual honors. Janneck has signed a golfscholarship with the University of Southern Mississippi.
Wesson captured the team title with a 315, edging St. Joe by 3strokes. St. Andrew’s was third at 344, followed by Loyd Star at387 and Bassfield at 490.
Wesson sophomore Perry Katherine Furr and Berry Givens followedHood with 83s. Other Wesson scores were Hunter Hood 84 and RussellElliott 87.
Warren Hood’s score was one stroke shy of tying the courserecord of 64. He shot 32 on the front nine and 33 on thebackside.
On the par-4 17th, Hood bagged his 7th birdie. His second shotto the elevated green rolled 20 feet past the hole but he was ableto sink it coming back.
“I played consistent and I hit 16 greens,” Hood pointed out.”Most of my birdie putts were close.”
Relying on Titleist irons and woods, plus a Cleveland wedge, the16-year-old Hood used a Yes! C-groove putter to work his magic onthe greens.
Wesson golf coach Jemmye Ann Helms praised Hood’s performance.”Warren played awesome out there today. He works so hard and heloves the game. He comes out here (to practice) before schoolstarts and he’s here after school.”
Hood had designs on making a birdie on the long par-5 16th whichdoglegs right. However, his fairway wood was short and left of thegreen. He made a difficult pitch below a grass-covered mound and2-putted for par.
“I was hitting into the hill on No. 16,” said Hood.
The Class 2A state tournament is set for May 16-17 at LakeCaroline in Madison County, near Gluckstadt. It will be a 36-holeevent.
Loyd Star was led by Will Smith’s 89.
