Dr. Frank LaRoy Leggett

Dr. Frank LaRoy Leggett, 83, went home to be with his Lord onFeb. 22, 2010. He died at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland after alengthy battle with cancer. A family physician in Bassfield for 44years, Dr. Leggett lived in Oxford after his retirement beforemoving to Trace Pointe Assisted Living Community in Clinton lastyear.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27 at CollegeHill Presbyterian Church in Oxford, the Rev. Alan Cochet, pastor.United Funeral Home in New Albany is in charge of arrangements. Amemorial service will be held March 6 at 2 p.m. at Bassfield HighSchool.

Those who say doctors don’t make good patients weren’t around Dr.Leggett in the last year as he thanked and joked with every doctorand nurse for performing their duties.

The fourth child born to Clarence Wesley and Bessie ChandlerLeggett, of Brookhaven, on Nov. 6, 1926, “Roy,” as he was known byhis family, grew up on the family farm. After moving to Bassfield,he closed his medical office and spent every Thursday afternoonwith his parents.

He left New Sight High School to enter the U.S. Navy, where heserved as an operating room corpsman in Norfolk, Va., during WorldWar II. After his discharge, he attended Copiah-Lincoln JuniorCollege, Baylor University and the University of MississippiMedical School under the two-year program then in place. Hecompleted his M.D. at Baylor University Medical School. Under theterms of a state of Mississippi scholarship program, he was toserve five years in rural Mississippi.

“Frank,” as others knew him, remained in Bassfield from 1956 to2000, serving as an alderman from 1967-2001, including severalterms as the mayor pro tempore. He served three terms as theJefferson Davis County Coroner. Dr. Leggett was the chief of staffat the Jefferson Davis County Hospital for many years. He was aSunday school teacher and chairman of deacons at Bassfield BaptistChurch. Upon his retirement, the local library was named in hishonor.

He retired to Oxford, where he was active in College HillPresbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and as chairman ofthe missions committee. A world traveler, Dr. Leggett, madenumerous mission trips to Central and South America, and EasternEurope. He provided financial assistance for several young men toattend seminary.

“Doc,” as many knew him, is survived by his brothers, Ray Leggett,of Columbia, Jay Leggett, of Orlando, Fla., David Leggett, ofHaughton, La., and Johnny Leggett, of Sevierville, Tenn. He waspreceded in death by two brothers, Woodrow and Chandler, inchildhood; his parents; his brother, Robert Leggett; and hissister, Evelyn Davis.

Visitation is Saturday, Feb. 27, from 1 until 2 p.m. at thechurch.
