Brookhaven defensive end Jaboree Poole has made a non-binding verbal commitment to sign a scholarship with the University of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles next February. Poole informed Ole Brook head coach Tommy Clopton of his decision Wednesday morning.
Poole, a 6-foot-3, 245-pound standout, earned Class 5A All-State honors as a junior. He helped lead the Panthers to the state playoffs and a 7-4 record.
“We are excited for Jaboree,” said Clopton. “He’s a great leader for our team. He works hard constantly. We look forward to seeing him play for Southern Miss.”
Poole, recognized for his fierce pass rush and hard-nosed play, also considered offers from Northwestern (La.) State and Alcorn State.
Area players currently on the Southern Miss team are linebacker Jamie Collins and defensive back Alex Smith of Franklin County and running back Kendrick Hardy of Lawrence County. Former BHS head coach Tucker Peavey was hired to coach the USM offensive line last December, joining new head coach Ellis Johnson’s staff.
