Two alderman candidates, including one incumbent, have signed upto run in this year’s elections, according to documents on file atthe City Clerk’s Office.

Alderman at large Les Bumgarner qualified Friday to seek asecond term in the citywide office. The Democrat said his firstterm had been an enjoyable and exciting time.

“I think we’ve got a good mayor and board,” Bumgarner said. “Ithink we’ve got the city moving in the right direction and I’d liketo help continue that progress.”

Bumgarner’s qualifying leaves Ward Two Alderman Terry Bates asthe only incumbent yet to qualify for re-election.

In other recent qualifying, Billy G. Carson signed up to run foralderman of Ward Six. Carson, an employee of Lincoln LumberCompany, is making his second attempt at the elected office.

“I believe I can be an asset for the city. I’d like to see someindustrial growth and bring in some new industry to Brookhaven,” hesaid.

Carson will face incumbent John E. “Buddy” Allen in theDemocratic primary.

Candidates who have qualified previously include:

* Mayor – incumbent Bob Massengill

* City Clerk – incumbent Mike Jinks.

* Chief of Police – incumbent Pap Henderson.

* Ward One alderman – incumbent Dorsey Cameron and Elisa CorleyJr.

* Ward Three alderman – incumbent Mary Wilson.

* Ward Four alderman – incumbent Shirley Estes.

* Ward Five alderman – incumbent Tom Smith.

With the exception of Republicans Estes and Massengill, allcandidates are running in the Democratic primary.

The qualifying deadline is Friday, March 4.

Party primaries are scheduled for Tuesday, May 3, with runoffson Tuesday, May 17 where needed. The general election is Tuesday,June 7.

Election winners are scheduled to take office in July.
