Smith, Brook’s defense turn back Mendenhall

MENDENHALL — Lineman LaTerrius Williams and his Brookhaventeammates stepped up on defense Friday night. They chased andharassed Mendenhall quarterback Montrell Edwards from one side ofthe field to the other, keeping the Tigers’ explosive offense atbay.
Meanwhile the Ole Brook offense got 206 rushing yards and 2touchdowns from Semmie Smith as the Panthers escaped Simpson Countywith a 20-12 Region 6-4A victory. They also got a 9-yard TD passfrom Charles (Bobo) Rancifer to wide receiver SimmieYarborough.
“I got No. 5 (Edwards) a couple of times,” said Williams, “and Imissed him, too. He was hard to catch.”
Edwards (5-7, 155, jr.) bobbed and weaved his way for 70 rushingyards on 21 rushes. He was tackled 6 times behind the line ofscrimmage for losses totaling 28 yards.
Edwards also displayed a strong passing arm. He hooked up withwide receiver Jason Catchings for 158 yards and 2 TDs, completing 6of 11 passes. He was intercepted once by cornerback KeyondrayPowell in the fourth quarter.
