Cass Brister pitched a 5-hitter and the Loyd Star Hornets beatWesson’s Cobras 7-3 Tuesday night in a Division 6-2A showdown atLoyd Star. Brister struck out 9 batters and walked 2.

Hornet reliever Seth Britt faced the final 2 batters and got asave. He allowed 1 hit and struck out 2.

Loyd Star improved to 15-5 overall and 6-0 in division play.Wesson is 1-5 in the division.

“Cass did an outstanding job on the mound,” said Loyd Star coachSidney Wheatley. “He kept them off balance with with his breakingball and fastball.

“We had timely hitting in the fifth,” added Wheatley . “Our kidsdelivered in clutch situations. Wesson always plays us tough.”

Ryan Williams was the losing pitcher and was replaced by JustinSmith in the sixth. In 5 innings, Williams walked 4 batters, fanned6 and gave up 6 hits.

Loyd Star first baseman Blake Wall hit a 3-run homer in thefifth. Catcher David Cuevas hit an RBI double in the fifth, pushinghome Jared Britt who had singled.

Centerfielder Joseph Langham tripled for Wesson in the 2-runseventh. Nick Gunter singled twice. Williams doubled. Collectingsingle hits for the Cobras were Tom Burgess and Justin Smith.

In the JV game, Loyd Star and Wesson battled toa 3-3 deadlock.

Loyd Star resumes play Friday at 3:30 p.m., at Piney Woods.
