Dorsey predicts bright future for Brookhaven track team

Coach Darien Dorsey firmly believes that the future is bright for Brookhaven’s track program. The first-year coach shared his opinion Thursday night during the Ole Brook team’s awards banquet, held at the Brookhaven Parks & Recreation Department headquarters.
“I expect these kids to win state next year,” said Dorsey. “We need more athletes on our track team. Parents, please encourage your children to run track. They could win a scholarship.”
Discus/shot put thrower Chris Calcote and triple jumper Waverli Culver were recognized as Overall Most Valuable Players during the awards ceremony. Calcote won the Class 5A stat title in the discus and was runner-up in the shot put.
“Chris could be a D-I signee next year,” predicted Dorsey. “Waverli should win state next year.”
The Rev. Phillip Hamilton presented the invocation prior to the delicious meal that was catered by Broma’s Deli.
“We are here to celebrate our athletes,” said Dorsey. “We have a lot of young talent. Our expectations are high for next year.”
Dorsey complimented his first group of seniors. “They did everything I asked them to do.”
Senior Rahjavian Fox briefly addressed the crowd and shared his feelings. “I love this track team. I am going to miss it. I will come back and support you all.”
Dorsey presented certificates to each member of the track team. Each senior received a trophy and an athletic gear bag.
Jessica Wilson and Michael Curtis were recognized as permanent team captains. Diamond Herring and Kentrell Tucker were named the Most Improved team members.
Culver and Calcote were named Most Valuable in Field Events. Andie Netherland and Marquise Hayes were named Most Valuable Distance Runners.
Fredericka Fairman and Ben Robinson were recognized as Most Valuable Sprinters.
The Coaches Award went to Aaliyah Butler.
Raven Smith and Fox received the Therrell-Tanner Award. Fox also was presented the Panther Award.
The Scholastic Awards went to Netherland and Kembe Keys and Cammise Benjamin and Michael Curtis.
Dorsey also recognized the Class 5A State Track meet participants. They included Calcote, Harris in the 400-meter run, Tyler Thomas in the shot put, Herring in the triple jump, Fairman in the high jump and the 4×400 girls relay team of Fairman, Butler, Herring and Arnancy Arnold.
