The Rev. John A. Cochran Jr.

Services for the Rev. John A. Cochran Jr. of Madisonville,Texas, and formerly of Brookhaven, were held Sunday, Nov. 5 atWalters Funeral Home Chapel in Centreville, Texas, with burial inNorth Creek Cemetery.

The Rev. Cochran, 63, died Nov. 2, 2000, in the St. JosephRegional Health Center in Bryan, Texas. He was born Oct. 29, 1937,in Vicksburg.

He was a businessman. He had served as pastor for Leona BaptistChurch and as a volunteer missionary with the Mission Service Corpsof the Baptist General Convention of Texas. He was a member ofLeona Baptist Church. He was a Mason and a Shriner. He had servedin the Naval Reserves.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and his brother, RobertEdward Cochran.

Survivors are his wife, Elizabeth Cochran of Madisonville,Texas; his sons, Michael T. Cochran of Huntsville, Texas, John ACochran III of Austin, Texas, and Thomas Van Cochran of TheWoodlands, Texas; his brother, Thomas Victor Cochran ofLeavenworth, Kan.; his special stepmother, Mazie S. Cochran of theLoyd Star community; and six grandchildren.

Annie D. Driskell

Services for Annie D. Driskell of Jackson, Ala., are 3 p.m.,Sunday, Dec. 3, at Lathan Funeral Home Chapel in Jackson, Ala.,with burial in Pine Crest Cemetery.

Visitation is Sunday, Dec. 3, from 1:30 p.m. until service timeat the funeral home.

Mrs. Driskell, 91, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, in Jackson, Ala.She was a native of Jackson, Ala.

She was a homemaker. She was a member of First United MethodistChurch and a member of the Eastern Star.

Survivors are her son, Donald Grady Driskell of Brookhaven;daughter, Carreen Driskell Bolen of Jackson, Ala.; eightgrandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First UnitedMethodist Church building fund in Jackson, Ala., or the MethodistChildren’s Home in Selma, Ala.

William Matthews

Services for William Matthews of Como are 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3,at Wells Funeral Home Chapel in Batesville with burial in ForrestMemorial Park.

Mr. Matthews, 68, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, of heart failure athis residence. He was born in Sardis on Jan. 19, 1933, to Roseveltand Trever Brinkley Matthews.

He was a shop foreman for 33 years at Jackson Implement in Como.He was a member of Como Church of Christ. He was a U.S. Armyveteran of the Korean War.

Survivors are his wife, Betty Matthews of Como; son, ChrisMatthews of Como; daughters, Diane M. Coaten of Sardis and Cathy M.Kimbel of Brookhaven; brother, David Matthews of Clarksdale;sisters, Grace M. Rogers of Sardis and Billie M. Waldrup of Sardis;and two grandchildren.

Howard Phillips

Services for Howard Phillips of Brookhaven are 2 p.m., Monday,Dec. 4, at Brookhaven Funeral Home Chapel with burial in CrystalSprings Cemetery.

Visitation is Sunday, Dec. 3, from 5-8 p.m. and Monday from 8a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Mr. Phillips, 87, died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at King’sDaughters Medical Center. He was born in Calhoun County on Feb. 14,1913, to the late Omer Doston and Missouria Irene DentonPhillips.

He was retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and SoilConservation. He was a member of First Baptist Church, where heserved as a deacon and taught Sunday school for a number of years.He was veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of the SoilSociety Club of America and Noon Lions Club. He werved on the boardof the Pearl River Basin Development and was a major influence inthe development of Lake Lincoln.

Preceding him in death were his parents; first wife, Mary NellMiers Phillips; son, Edward Miers Phillips; five brothers; and asister.

Survivors are his wife, Marguerita Lord Phillips; daughters,Martha Anna Lewis of Shreveport, La., and Katy Wallace and JoyMcArthur of Tupelo; brother, Jessie Phillips of Oxford; sister,Ruth Pipes of Amarillo, Texas; grandchildren, Amanda Kairschner,Allison Tucker, Ashley Wallace, Heath McArthur, Justin McArthur andHeather Bowen; and three great-grandchildren.
