As a middle linebacker, Enterprise’s Travis Leggett plugs theholes and stops the run. Leggett accounted for 9 tackles inEnterprise’s 49-18 Friday night victory over the host West LincolnBears.

Leggett (6-1, 225, sr.) made those tackles in the first half asEnterprise head coach Wayne Rogers pulled his starting unit earlyin the third quarter. For his performance, Leggett has beenselected The DAILY LEADER’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Rogers said his Fighting Yellow Jackets regrouped after the 9-8loss to Bogue Chitto in their season opener. They played wellagainst West Lincoln.

“Travis had a good game,” said Rogers. “We played our startersthe first half. After the first possession of the second half, Itook my starters out.”

Leggett had a career-best 18 tackles in the season-opening lossto Bogue Chitto.

“Travis is light on his feet so he can move well,” Rogerspointed out. “He has a good eye for the ball. I moved him tolinebacker last year and we put him in the middle this year. Hepursues real well, too.”

Wearing jersey No. 65, Leggett starts at right tackle onoffense. He likes playing defense best.

“I don’t let them (opponents) run up the middle,” said Leggett.”My job is to read people with the ball.”

Leggett calls defensive signals for the Jackets and makes sureeach player is in the right position. He’s joined by outsidelinebackers Josh Nations and Kevin Brizzard.

Working in Enterprise’s defensive line are Jake Walker and TysonRials at end. Larkin Smith is the nose guard.

In the secondary, Cody White and Garrett Greer are the Bandits.Cody Brister and Matt King are the cornerbacks. Brad Prather is thefree safety.

In the weight room, Leggett bench-presses 325 pounds. He squatswith 540 pounds.

“It felt great to beat West Lincoln,” said Leggett. “We had anupset the week before.”

This week the Jackets are preparing for a home game againstNatchez Cathedral. A victory over the Green Wave would surpass lastyear’s win total.

Leggett said he enjoys playing for Rogers. “He’s a defensive(coordinator) coach. We want some more wins this year.”

For Leggett, the 17-year-old son of Dale and Theresa Leggett,the Enterprise roots run deep since both parents graduated fromEnterprise. His father played middle linebacker for Coach BreckWhitworth in the late 1970s.

Looking to the future, Leggett said he is considering a careerin sports medicine. He maintains a 3.4 GPA in the classroom. Hisfavorite subject is history.

His favorite college team is LSU. Enterprise’s uniforms bear astriking resemblance to the LSU design. The Fighting Tigers areknown for their defense, too.
