After a bone-chilling Friday night at Terry, the BrookhavenPanthers were looking forward to the warm Saturday afternoontemperatures. The Panthers made the 6-mile ride down Highway 583 tomeet Lincoln County neighbor Enterprise and the Brookhaven batsheated up to the tune of a 13-1 win over the host Yellow Jackets ina 5-inning affair.

Brookhaven defeated Enterprise 19-0 in the JV game.

Brookhaven hosts Raymond, Tuesday for 2 games. The JV gamebegins at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 7. Enterprisetravels to Adams County to meet Natchez Cathedral, with the JVgame’s first pitch at 5, followed by the varsity game at 7.

Brookhaven 13, Enterprise 1

Enterprise, coached by Scott Leggett and Adam Moak, used thebottom of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. After holdingBrookhaven in the the top of the inning, the Jackets stepped to theplate and took advantage of their opportunity. Justin Kyzarsingled. Monti Crotwell doubled to right, scoring Kyzar.

Brookhaven (7-10) took its first lead of the day at 2-1 in thesecond. Designated hitter Adam Ogden singled and later moved tosecond on a passed ball. Catcher Grant McDonnieal walked. Twobatters later, centerfielder Darius Perkins reached on an errorthat scored Ogden. Rightfielder Josh Townsend reached on afielder’s choice, scoring McDonnieal.

The Panthers, coached by Randy Spring, broke the game open inthe third. Brookhaven sent 11 batters to the plate, scoring 8 runsfor a 10-1 lead. Shortstop Brooks Hall singled and stole second.Ogden doubled to score Hall. McDonnieal cleared the bases with a2-run homer to right. Pitcher Scotty Smith walked. Second basemanReggie Smith doubled. Centerfielder Darius Perkins singled to scoreScotty and Reggie.

Townsend walked. Third baseman Ben Goza doubled, scoring Perkinsand Townsend. Two batters later, Hall singled to score Goza.

“We are a very young ballclub,” said Leggett following the game.”This is only our third game in the last two weeks. We have beenrained out a lot.”

Brookhaven increased its lead to 11-1 in their half of thefourth. McDonnieal doubled. Two batters later, Reggie Smith singledto score McDonnieal.

The Panthers scored their final 2 runs in the top of the fifth.Hall was hit by a pitch. Ogden walked. McDonnieal singled to loadthe bases. Scotty Smith grounded into a fielder’s choice to scoreHall. Two batters later, Perkins was hit by a pitch to scoreOgden.

“We were looking for Scotty (Smith) and Grant (McDonnieal) tohave a break out game today,” said Spring following the game.”Scotty threw well today and Grant hit the ball good.”

McDonnieal, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound freshman, drew his firstvarsity start behind the plate. He led the Panther offensive, going3-for-3 with a walk, a single, a double, a home run, 4 runs scoredand 3 RBIs. Perkins had 2 singles, scored a run and delivered 4RBIs. Ogden singled, doubled, scored 3 runs and a RBI.

Scotty Smith picked up the win for Brookhaven. He tossed a3-hitter in 5 complete innings. He allowed 1 earned run with 7strikeouts.

Kyzar suffered the loss for Enterprise, allowing 11 runs (10earned) on 11 hits. He walked 6 and struck out 1.

Matt Floyd singled for the Jackets.

In the JV game, the Panthers authored the 3-inning, no-hitshutout. Brent Hinton picked up the win, allowing no runs, no hits,no walks with 4 strikeouts.

Scoring runs for Brookhaven were Josh Patrick (4), Cody Dunaway,McDonnieal (3), Scotty Smith (3), W. T. King (2), Hinton (2), T. J.Qualls, Marlon Dixon (3) and Matt Walker (2).

Collecting hits for the Panthers were Dunaway with 2 singles.Scotty Smith singled. King tripled. Dixon had 2 singles and adouble. McDonnieal homered.

Benny Shoemake suffered the loss for the Jackets.
