Salem Wildcats run all over Enterprise

SALEM — The Salem Wildcats used a strong running game todemolish the visiting Enterprise Yellow Jackets 35-6 Friday nightat “The Swamp.” Twelve Wildcats combined to rush 45 times for 275yards. Michael Ellzey led the way with 120 yards on 14 carries.

“We ran the Power-I and were able to block and move well in thatformation,”, said Salem head coach Kenneth Murphy. “Enterprise wasable to get around it some on the outside. They played veryhard.”

Salem improved its record to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in Region 4-1A.Enterprise fell to 2-3 and 1-2.

A blocked punt led to the first Salem score with 0:17 left inthe opening quarter. The Wildcats took possession of the ball atthe Enterprise two-yard line and Teddy Martin took it in fromthere. Justin Brumfield added the PAT for a 7-0 advantage at theend of the period.

Tailback Terrell May scored the Yellow Jackets’ only points with4:26 to play in the second quarter on a six-yard run. The touchdowncapped a six-play, 35-yard drive. The PAT was unsuccessful, leavingthe score at 7-6.

Salem made the score 21-6 at the half after Jeffrey White scoredtwo touchdowns within 24 seconds of each other. The first, aone-yard plunge, came with 1:39 to play in the half. A failedtwo-point conversion attempt left the score at 13-6.

White’s second touchdown of the quarter came with 1:15 to play.This time he took the ball into the end zone to cap a short,two-play, 19-yard march. The Wildcats had regained the footballafter recovering the kickoff from the previous touchdown. Martinran for the two-point conversion to end the first half scoring.

The Wildcats wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in thethird quarter. White’s third touchdown of the night, a nine-yardrun, came with 9:41 to play and climaxed a five-play, 63-yarddrive. Brumfield’s PAT made the score 28-6 after three periods ofplay.

Salem ended the scoring with 10:38 to play in the game. A15-yard pass from Martin to Brumfield finalized a six-play, 42-yarddrive. Brumfield again added the PAT for the final margin.

“We just got whipped,” said Enterprise head coach Mac Bezet.”I’m really disappointed. We didn’t show class and character in alot of ways.

“We need to work on understanding what it means to work togetherand be a team,” said Bezet. “Until that happens we may have a lotmore games like this.”

The Enterprise offense was led by May who had 87 rushing yardsand the touchdown on 18 carries. Blake McKee picked up 34 yards oneight carries and Alex Powell had 18 yards on nine carries..

Cory Everett completed seven of 14 passes for 50 yards. He wasintercepted once. Trey Herrington completed one pass for 25 yards.Rodney Barker passed twice. May caught five passes for 33 yards,Herrington two for 17 yards and McKee one for 25 yards.

Matt Poisson punted twice for three yards. He had one puntblocked. Jackets had 13 first downs in the game and lost one ofthree fumbles. They were whistled for nine penalties for 103yards.

Bronson Russell topped the Enterprise defense with seventackles. Wayne Nations had six stops and Powell recorded five.

White had 62 carries and three touchdowns on seven carries tofollow Ellzey in the Wildcats’ running game. Martin had 14 yardsand a touchdown on seven carries.

Martin completed four of eight passes for 95 yards and atouchdown. Desmond Williams, White, Brumfield and Erick Kennedyeach had one reception.

Brumfield punted three times for a 32.3-yard average. TheWildcats tallied 13 first downs and recovered each of their threefumbles. They were penalized 14 times for 115 yards.

Enterprise will try to regain the winning form this week as theJackets host the Stringer Red Devils for homecoming. Salem hostsSt. Aloysius.
