Co-Lin men struggle to beat hustling Southwest Bears

SUMMIT — According to Co-Lin guard Joe Holliday, the sweetsmell of success was no where to be found in Holmes GymnasiumThursday night. Holliday’s 21 points, including 16 the second half,helped the Wolves ease past the Southwest Mississippi CommunityCollege Bears 65-58 in a South Division showdown.
“We stunk it up tonight,” said Holliday. “We played bad but westuck together and found a way to win. We never gave up.”
Holliday and his teammates were staring at a 13-point deficitwith 16:01 left in the game. Three straight field goals bySouthwest guard Brian Phelps had pushed the Bears ahead 38-25,forcing Co-Lin coach Dennis Sims to call for another timeout.
“We played poorly the whole time,” said Sims. “Give Southwestcredit. They played hard while we just stood around and missedshots.”
The Bears (1-11, 0-2) were hungry for any kind of victory. A winover their archrival would taste like a buffet dinner.
In one spurt, Holliday sacked 3 straight treys, Geric Andersonhit a jumper and 6-foot-10 center Christian Marshall sank a shortshot, giving Co-Lin a 41-40 lead with 11:51 left to play.
Southwest responded and went up by 6 points, 47-41 on a trey byVince Evans. Co-Lin took control at 54-51 on another Holliday treyand 2:40 left to play.
“It was like dominoes at the end,” said Sims. “Everythingstarted to go our way.”
Holliday netted a baseline drive and a 15-footer, putting Co-Linon top 58-53, with 1:15 left. Tremaine Enoch tacked on 2 freethrows and a breakaway layup off an assist from Ivory Dishmon toslam the door on Southwest.
Southwest coach Bill Wallace said he has lost 12 players sinceearly September. He filled his roster with walkons and a fewscholarship players.
Phelps, a 6-2 freshman guard from Vicksburg, led all scorerswith 22 points. Eric Mitchell, a 6-4 freshman guard from McComb,added 11 points.
