ST. CATHARINE, Ky. — Adam Khur was a tower of power for the St.Catharine College Patriots in Saturday’s NJCAA Southeast SuperRegional championship round. The 6-foot-10 sophomore right-handersilenced the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Wolves with a 4-hitshutout, forcing a second game in the title showdown.
Khur, from Mason, Ohio, tossed his first complete game of theseason. He struck out 8 batters and walked 2.
“I threw it well today,” said Khur. “My fastball and curveballwere working pretty well. I had a lot of defense behind me,too.”
St. Catharine coach Luther Bramlett said he was pleased andsurprised by Khur’s stalwart performance in a must-win situation.”I never would have thought Adam would throw a CG (compete game). He started the season in the bullpen. He’s been a work inprogress.”
Khur was making the long, winding road back from shouldersurgery during his high school career. He dominated the Wolves andkept them off-balance.
“Adam found his breaking ball and he found the strike zonetoday,” said Bramlett. “What helps him is his 83-87 (mph) fastballlooks faster because he’s so close to the plate on his extension.Co-Lin was hitting a lot of ball late because of that.”
Co-Lin rightfielder Xavier Qualls echoed Bramlett’s statement.He had 1 of Co-Lin’s hits.
“Their pitcher was pretty good,” said Qualls. “He was tall sohis pitches were deceptive. They looked faster than what theywere.”
The Patriots (39-9) also sparkled on offense. They jumped onCo-Lin sophomore starter Lance Deville for 4 runs on 4 hits in thefirst inning. Consecutive doubles by Tyler Tucker, Shane Simpkinsand Chase McDonald highlighted the scoring spree.
Co-Lin, the designated home team, was unable to get a runner tothird base after the first inning as the Patriots played flawlessdefense and turned 2 double plays. In the first
frame, Co-Lin leadoff batter Josh Logan reached on an error. Hestole second and third base but was left stranded.
Co-Lin’s others hits came from third baseman Garrett Jones, first baseman Ben Sandifer and leftfielder Joseph Langham.
