Job cuts announced Wednesday by Delphi Corporation are notexpected to have an impact on its Mississippi operations inBrookhaven and Clinton, company official said.

“We don’t anticipate any of these layoffs affecting us inMississippi,” said Beth Magee Smith, supervisor of public relationsfor Delphi’s Clinton plant. “Brookhaven is good and Clinton isgood.”

Delphi’s Brookhaven plant employs about 600 people and theClinton plant has 1,200 employees.

Corporate officials Wednesday announced plans to cut 6,100 jobsfrom its worldwide work force of about 195,000. The cuts amount toabout 3 percent of the total and will occur at more than 25 sitesin the United States and Europe, but no plant closings areexpected.

“We continue to take the tough steps to bring cost structure inline,” said Alan Dawes, Delphi’s chief financial officer.

The Brookhaven plant has received a variety of honors for itsworld class operations.

The plant was recognized as 2000’s Industry of the Year by thechamber of commerce’s Industrial Development Foundation after theplant completed a $73 million improvements project.

In recent years, the plant has converted much of its productionfrom a labor-intensive, wire-cutting operation to ahighly-automated assembly process. It produces a variety ofautomotive components, including bussed electrical centers (BECs)for GM trucks and sport utility vehicles, electronic brake controlsfor GM and Isuzu vehicles and precision-molded parts for otherautomakers.

Mentioning various projects, Brookhaven Delphi Manager KenHarlan had a positive outlook for the local plant.

“In the future, we see a lot of work being done here,” Harlansaid.
