There was no division championship at stake Thursday night onPerry Miller Field. West Lincoln’s Bears still considered the 16-0shutout of the North Pike junior varsity a major victory and theysoaked Coaches Don Holston and Luke Addison with icy showers fromwater coolers.

West Lincoln’s record climbed to 3-6, giving the Bears theirmost victories in one season for the 3-year-old program. Theyovercame six turnovers to shut out the Jaguars from Summit.

“These kids have worked mighty hard and they deserve to win,”said Holston, looking for a dry shirt in the dressing room. “Theykind of got down on themselves,” after recent lopsided losses toDivision 7-1A foes Dexter and Enterprise.

Earlier wins this season came over the St. Joseph varsity andthe St. Andrew’s junior varsity.

“It’ll be JV versus JV next year when we play North Pike,”Holston pointed out. “We have a real good crop of seventh andeighth graders coming up.”

West Lincoln plays its final game next Thursday night, hostingthe Bogue Chitto Bobcats. The game was moved from Friday night.

Sophomore fullback Stacey Fells provided the Bears with somemajor offense last night. He rushed the football 8 times for 113yards and one touchdown.

In the second quarter, West Lincoln ended the scoreless streakwith a safety. North Pike freshman quarterback Tim White wastackled in the end zone and the Bears led 2-0.

After a fumble recovery at West Lincoln’s 44-yard line, theBears scored on second down from midfield. Fells burst up themiddle and outran the secondary.

A penalty pushed the extra point try back six yards and JacobMartin converted for a 26-yard PAT, making it 9-0 with 6:41 left inthe first half.

In the third quarter, tailback Kalis Fells took over. He brokeloose on a 53-yard scoring jaunt. A senior in eligibility, hefinished with 17 carries for 172 yards.

Martin’s PAT gave the Bears a 16-0 lead with 9:38 left in thethird quarter.

North Pike also was plagued by turnovers. The Jaguars lost fourfumbles and White was intercepted by Kalis Fells on the first playof the fourth quarter at the Bears’ 34-yard line.

The Jaguars threatened to score in the last minute of the gameas Dominique Pittman scrambled for 16 yards and White gained 13more on a reverse to the Bears’ 18-yard line. Two passes by Whitefell incomplete and time expired.

North Pike coach Adam Barron said this is White’s first year toplay football.

On defense, outside linebacker Blake Howse led the Bearswith 15 tackles. Inside linebacker Cody Hall had 14 tackles anddefensive end Alan Skates made 10. Mario Black and Chase Howse eachhad 9 tackles.
