Remember to vote: Ward One to pick alderman Tuesday
Published 7:00 pm Sunday, May 19, 2013
Tuesday will be election day in Brookhaven – but only for the citizens of Ward One.
Those who vote at the Cloverdale Acres Administration Building are reminded that to return to their precinct Tuesday, May 21, and cast ballots in the runoff between incumbent Ward One Alderman Dorsey Cameron and challenger Randy Belcher.
Belcher and Cameron finished first and second, respectively, in the five-man field of candidates in the May 7 Democratic primary. However, since Belcher failed to receive more than 50 percent of the votes, a runoff with Cameron was set for May 21.
The Ward One polling place will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. We encourage the ward’s citizens to take advantage of their opportunity to choose their leader for the next four years by casting a vote for the candidate of their choice.
Since there are no Republicans or independents running for Ward One alderman, the winner of this Tuesday’s election will become the ward’s new representative on the Brookhaven Board of Aldermen.
Four of the other new board members also have been decided, with Ward Two incumbent Terry Bates facing no opposition in this spring’s election, and the winners of Wards Three, Four and Five having been decided in the May 7 primary election.
Ward Three and Four incumbents Mary Wilson and Shirley Estes, respectively, will be returning to represent their constituents, and newcomer Fletcher Grice will serve Ward Five’s citizens.
The Ward Six position, along with the offices of mayor, police chief, city clerk and alderman-at-large, will be decided in the June 4 general election.
The June 4 ballot also will include a local-option liquor referendum for the city.
The May 21 and June 4 elections offer local citizens the opportunity to choose the men and women who will serve our city and make important decisions that will affect all of our futures.
We encourage all registered voters to seize cast their ballots wisely, with our city’s best interests in mind.
