JACKSON – If there is such a thing as an upset in track andfield, then Hughes Field in Jackson provided the backdrop for onethe biggest upsets in Mississippi high school track history. Led byseveral second-place finishes, the McComb Lady Tigers captured theClass 4A girls state championship by outscoring Pearl 52.5 to50.

In other action, Amite County outscored Pontotoc 86-66 tocapture the 3A girls crown. Franklin County’s girls scored 15points and Hazlehurst brought home 10 points.

Tylertown authored the 3A boys championship, outdistancingCarthage 96-94.5. Franklin County scored 3 points.

The Brookhaven Lady Panthers finished sixth with 37.5 points.Junior sprinters Kenyata Coleman and Latoria Kerr each receivedmedals for placing in the top 3 in their respective events. Colemanheld second-place finish in the 200-meters (25.37), and third-placefinishes in the 100 (13.1) and 400-meter (57.65) runs. Latoria Kerrtied for third in the high jump, leaping 4 feet, 10 inches. -Dorothy Youmans of Poplarville captured the win with a jump of 5feet, 2 inches.

The Lady Panthers 4×100 and 4×200 meter relay teams placed fifthin both events. Kerr, Coleman, Alicia Hawkins and Ivy Brown enteredin both races. Brown was a late replacement for Shalesia Trunner,who was out due to illness.

“The girls ran hard today,” said Brookhaven track coach PatrickHardy. “It was very hot today.” Hardy was referring to the near100-degree temperatures at the Jackson-based track.

In the field events, Brookhaven’s Elaine Smith placed sixth inthe shot put with a toss of 33 feet, 6 inches.

Pearl eighth grade sprinter Bianca Knight won the 100 (12.44),200 (24.54) and 400-meter (56.59) runs for the Lady Pirates.

McComb’s lone first place was Laura Rollins in the 100-meter lowhurdles with a time of 16.08.

In boys action, Port Gibson and Oxford tied for the 4A titlewith 98 points apiece. Pearl finished a distance third with 58points. Franklin County scored 3 points.

Brookhaven scored 8 points, relying on the strong arm ofsophomore Jimmy Johns who captured second-place in the discus witha throw of 141 feet, 11 inches. John’s toss came on his first throwin 6 tries. Derrick Ervin of Kosciusko won the event with a throwof 142 feet, 10 inches on his fifth attempt.

“Jimmy had a good throw,” said coach Rod Henderson who assistsHardy and handles the field events.
