Wolves hold off Miss. Delta

WESSON – Sophomore guards Jerimie Collier and Jason Scott andfreshman forward Richie Miller came up with the necessary points inthe final three minutes of the game Monday night to give the hostCo-Lin Wolves a tough 63-59 win over the Mississippi DeltaTrojans.

With less than three minutes left, Miller netted two free throwsto give the Wolves a 59-57 lead over the Trojans. Scott came backwith a putback for a 61-59 lead with 2:15 left to play.

Collier, who finished the game with 20 points, made a steal offa bad Trojan pass and went in for a two-handed dunk with nineseconds left to preserve the win.

“Jerimie was trailing the rest but he was in the right place atthe right time,” said Co-Lin men’s coach Dennis Sims following thewin.

The win improves the Wolves record to 2-3 while the Trojans fellto 3-4 with the loss. Coaching Delta is Dougal Thomas.

At halftime, the Wolves led the Trojans by nine points, 35-26.Co-Lin led for most of the second half until Delta sophomore guardMarerllis Nix hit a three-pointer to tie the score at 47-all with11:04 remaining in the game. The Trojans added two more points fora 49-47 edge when Collier hit a three-point to put the Wolves backon top 50-49 with 7:39 left to play.

Nix hit a three pointer for Delta with 3:15 left to tie the gamefor the final time at 47-47.

“We still didn’t shoot the ball very well,” stated Sims. “We arenot consistent.”

The teams battled close in the first half until Co-Lin sophomoreguard Nick Mikell hit a three-pointer to give the Wolves a sevenpoint, 17-10, lead over the Trojans with 9:45 on the clock. Collierhit a bucket with 11 seconds left until halftime to give Co-Lin thenine-point halftime lead.

Top scorer of the game was Scott with 23 points and fiverebounds. Collier also collected seven rebounds and made twosteals. Jeremy Richardson had four rebounds and had threeassists.

Leading Delta with 16 points and five rebounds was Nix whofouled out in the second half with 3:08 left to play. KendrickJohnson fired in 13 points followed by Michael Castellane with 11points and four rebounds. Finishing with 10 assists was KellyScarver.

Co-Lin travels to Coahoma Thursday night for a doubleheader. Thewomen play at 6 p.m. followed by the men.
