Lady Cats silence Cathedral

BOGUE CHITTO – Toy Smith pitched a 2-hit shutout and the BogueChitto Lady Cats romped to a 9-0 Friday triumph against the NatchezCathedral Green Wave in the second round of the Class 1A statefastpitch softball playoffs. Smith struck out four batters andwalked one as BC swept the best-of-three series.
Bogue Chitto (17-8) awaits the winner of the Nanih Waiya-Sebastopolseries in the South State finals. It also is a best-of-threeseries. This is the third straight trip to the South title seriesfor Coach Scott Leggett’s Cats.
“We did what we needed to do to win,” said Leggett. “We played gooddefense and Toy pitched a good game.”
A large, partisan crowd filled the stands as the Cats claimed a 1-0lead in the bottom of the first inning. They added three runs inthe third and three more in the fifth.
Second baseman Bradi Davis directed BC’s 12-hit offensive with foursingles. Josie Porter tripled and doubled. Adrienne Wallace singledtwice. Darcy Miller doubled.
Cathedral (19-10) had pushed BC into extra innings Thursday nightbefore losing 10-8. The Greenies had no answer for thehard-throwing Smith.
“After our big game from last night, we didn’t have the energyneeded,” said Cathedral coach Gary Blackwell. “Our bats weren’thitting. Bogue Chitto has a good team and I wish them the best ofluck.
“We always liked to battle with them,” he noted.
Ginny Daggett (1 K, 0 BB) started in the circle for Cathedral andabsorbed the loss. Mollie Devening (2 K, 0 BB) replaced Daggett onthe mound. They each hit one batter.
