MONTICELLO – The Brookhaven Panthers dominated the Lawrence County Cougars 33-0 in high school football action Friday at Lawrence County High School.

Panther quarterback Fred Trevillion rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another as Brookhaven raced to a 20-0 first quarter lead and were never seriously threatened after that.

With the win, Tommy Clopton’s Panthers improved to 2-0 on the young season. Lawrence County, under first-year coach Herbert Davis, fell to 1-1.

“I thought our guys came out and asserted themselves and took control of the game in the first quarter,” said Clopton. “We had a little bit of a lull in the third and fourth quarter but found a way to finish.

“Our defense had a great night. It was such a hot and muggy night. They did a good job of keeping it up for the entire four quarters and pitching the shutout,” Clopton said.

The game couldn’t have started out any better for the Panthers or any worse for the homestanding Cougars. Ole Brook took the opening kickoff and drove 58 yards in just four plays. Fred Trevillion completed a 33-yard swing pass to Javontae Trevillion on the first play of the game. Three plays later, Trevillion scored on a seven-yard run. The extra point was missed.

When Lawrence County’s Laderrick McCray mishandled the ensuing kickoff, Brookhaven’s Darius O’Quinn pounced on it at the Cougar 21. Two plays later, Fred Trevillion scored on a 12-yard run. BHS led 12-0 barely more than two minutes into the game.

It was then time for the Ole Brook defense to shine. Led all night by linebackers Leo Lewis and Tyris Hill, the Panthers stuffed the Cougars’ first offensive possession, forcing a 3-and-out. After a short LCHS punt, Trevillion connected with Shuntez Smith for 38 yards, setting up Teviaunte McDaniel’s 14-yard touchdown run. Jermone Kelly ran for two points after a botched extra point snap. It was 20-0 with 7:37 still left in the first quarter.

Fred Trevillion completed six of his first seven passes, and connected on seven of 11 overall, for 164 yards. Javontae Trevillion was his main target, catching three passes for 92 yards. That duo connected on a 28-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter, making it a 26-0 game at halftime.

The final score of the night came on a 55-yard run by Ken Boyd, early in the fourth quarter. Boyd led the Panthers with 75 yards on three carries. McDaniel gained 47 yards on five carries. For the night, Brookhaven rushed for 208 yards on 30 carries, as interior linemen Stephen Springfield, Keefa Nelson, Josh Cole, Jared Dillon, and Anthony Wilson largely controlled the line of scrimmage.

While Brookhaven’s offense was having a profitable night, not much was going right for the LCHS offense. Freshman quarterback Hayden Davis, who lit it up against Wesson one week earlier, completed just seven of 24 passes for 62 yards. Davis was sacked four times, and scrambled away from pressure many more time.

Several dropped passes also limited the Cougar passing game.

Sophomore T-Tez Cole led the Cougars in rushing with 60 yards on 16 tries. Gabraun Smith and Tony Maye each had two pass receptions.

The only stat that the Panthers’ staff didn’t like was the penalty column, as Brookhaven was penalized a whopping 13 times for 126 yards.

The week, Ole Brook will host North Pike at King Field, in the Panthers’ home opener. Lawrence County will travel to Crystal Springs.
