BROOKHAVEN — National Weather Service in Jackson forecasts a chance of rain is on the horizon as drought conditions continue in Lincoln County. By the time the rain comes, 2024 could be in the record books for consecutive dry days streak.
According to NWS Jackson, there is now a 30 percent chance of rain on Halloween. Precipitation chances all depend on how frontal boundaries move according to the NWS Jackson forecast discussion.
Otherwise, the forecast is still sunny, blue clear skies and warm highs in the 80s with lows cooling off to the high 50s and low 60s. If the rain comes, it will snap a consecutive days of no rain streak going on 30 at the end of today. By Thursday, the streak could reach 36 days which would place 6th in the top 10 streaks of consecutive dry days. The longest dry streak is 73 days which ended on Dec. 4, 1924.
Depending on the amount of rain, if Lincoln County gets any rain, this could be one of the driest Octobers in recorded history. Five Octobers in 1904, 1924, 1952, 1963 and 2005 recorded 0 inches of rainfall. Last year, 0.24 inches of rain was recorded which is the 10th driest October in recorded history.
Drought conditions continue in Lincoln County with 100 percent of the county classified as abnormally dry by the United States Drought Monitor. Abnormally dry conditions are the first stage of drought development and long range forecasts call for drought conditions to develop further this fall.
Fortunately, low winds are helping keep wildfire calls down. Fuels are very dry and the humidity is low which help contribute to fire activity. Fires can still get out of hand quickly, Lincoln County officials ask residents to not burn until conditions improve.
According to the National Hurricane Center, no tropical cyclone activity is expected in the next 48 hours or seven days.
