BROOKHAVEN — Forecasts call for dangerous heat this week in Lincoln County. Wednesday could be the hottest day of the week.

According to the National Weather Service, Wednesday’s high could reach 101 degrees. Heat indices are forecast to reach 107 Wednesday. Wednesday night’s low is 72 which is not bad considering Thursday and Friday night lows will only drop to 75 respectively. If Wednesday’s high reaches 101 degrees it will be just shy of a record set in 1947 at 102 degrees.

NWS Jackson forecasts a 0 percent chance of rain for the next six days. A heat advisory is in effect Tuesday until 7 p.m. and will likely be in effect Wednesday as well.

Monday’s high temperature reached 93.9 degrees with a heat index of 102 between 4 and 6 p.m.

Storm brewing

Thunderstorms and showers associated with a tropical wave is currently in the western Caribbean Sea according to the National Hurricane Center. The good news, chances of tropical cyclone formation are low at 10 percent in the next 48 hours and 30 percent in the next seven days. Forecasts show the storm moving straight to the west towards the Yucatan Peninsula.

“Environmental conditions are expected to become more conducive for development later this week as the system moves across the western Caribbean Sea or the southern Gulf of Mexico,” the National Hurricane Center states.

Tropical Storm Debby, which made landfall as a Category 1 Hurricane this past weekend, continues to move up the inland along the Atlantic Coast. The Daily Leader will continue to monitor storm development during the 2024 Hurricane Season.
