JACKSON — Bill Cossar oversaw his last meeting as chairman of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks commission on June 19. At the time, it was unknown if he would be reappointed to the commission. 

Gov. Tate Reeves opted to appoint Colin Maloney to replace Cossar at the end of June. Cossar was recognized at the end of June’s commission meeting with a resolution read by MDWFP Executive Director Lynn Posey. 

“This resolution recognizes Cossar’s lifelong dedication to public service and outdoor stewardship,” Posey said. “Born in Charleston, Mississippi to the Honorable George Payne Cossar and Finney Cossar, Bill Cossar has been deeply involved in community service and outdoor activities, such as hunting and fishing, from a young age. After graduating from the University of Mississippi, he had a successful career with Mississippi Power and Light, eventually becoming Vice President. He has also been active in civic organizations like the Rotary Club and the American Red Cross, and has served on various state commissions.”

Cossar was first appointed to the commission in 2014 and reappointed in 2019. Posey said Cossar never missed a regularly scheduled commission meeting. 

“It has been a fast 10 years. I remember the first meeting I came to. This agency is dedicated. I’m proud to be a part of it,” Cossar said. “The people have been super good to me. It has been an honor.” 

New officers were elected at the meeting held in June, Commissioner Scott Coopwood will serve as the chairman and Gary Rhodes will serve as the vice-chairman on the commission.
