MT. ZION — Good samaritans responded to the source of a loud boom around 11:45 p.m. Monday night on Lott Smith Road. A vehicle left the road down the hill from Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Kayla Branning, a resident on Lott Smith, said she heard screaming and went to help.
In the curve in front of their home, a grey Ford car had left the roadway, took out two trees and sandwiched itself between trees. Tire marks in the grass showed it leave the curve and slide for several feet on the shoulder. From Lott Smith Road, all you could see were the tail lights of the vehicle as it had gone down an embankment towards a slough.
Two young women managed to get out of the vehicle when Branning pulled up from her home and she worked to keep the driver conscious and with the passenger to notify parents while KDMC was in route. Her husband Dewayne Branning was on scene to help out as well. Once KDMC got on scene, they were able to provide additional medical care before taking the occupants to the hospital.
The Brannings stayed on scene chatting with Lincoln County Sheriff Office Deputies until a wrecker pulled the mangled vehicle out of the tree line and onto a flatbed truck shortly after 1:10 a.m.
