BROOKHAVEN — It has been a little over a week since Brookhaven Police Department responded to a shooting on Fred Walley Drive. Brookhaven Police Detective Tim Sander confirmed officers had responded to a domestic dispute between a husband and wife about 15 minutes prior to the shooting. 

Call reports show that a separate complaint call was received at 9:50 a.m. followed by shots fired at 10:04 a.m. on Fred Walley Drive Tuesday. 

Sander said Officers responding to the domestic dispute reported the husband acting as if he was about to leave. The officers left after he had left but he came back. 

“When he came back, he snuck up behind his wife and shot her with a pistol,” Sander said. “She was shot in the arm and chest. He then self-inflicted a shot. They were taken to KDMC and required further treatment and were taken to UMMC in Jackson.” 

The wife was treated for her injuries and later discharged. The husband is still at the hospital under medical treatment. 

“He is in critical condition but stable,” Sander said. “For right now, there are pending charges until further investigation.”  

At the crime scene

The crime scene was close to Union Street and Ingram Street and Mamie Martin Elementary School. 

A man wearing a tan shirt, pants and a black bucket hat walked down the street and sang with a soulful voice, “I’m going to keep on praying. I got to pray. Pray everyday, oh Lord.”

Yellow placards were placed down on the street next to pieces of evidence as a detective walked around taking pictures with a camera. A sign on the exterior of the Oakview apartment building stated it was Apartment No. 2 in the complex.
